Chapter 7

The mourners did not know which shock to process first.

The slap.

The pregnancy.

The senator.

The DNA vial.

The attorney.

The word sister.

A private cemetery that had hosted quiet burials for Washington families suddenly felt like the steps of a courthouse.

Photographers moved carefully but relentlessly.

Cameras shifted angles.

Reporters whispered questions they dared not shout yet.

Victoria stood frozen, one hand near her chest.

Her pearls no longer looked elegant.

They looked like something tightening around her throat.

“You’re lying,” she said, but the words had lost force.

Margaret looked at her.

“I am reading from a sealed report preserved under estate authority.”

Victoria’s eyes darted to Adrian.

“You knew?”

Adrian did not answer quickly enough.

That silence wounded her more than a confession.

Elena watched them both.

She had imagined many things about this funeral.

Crying over her mother’s coffin.

Placing flowers.

Whispering goodbye.

She had not imagined standing before cameras with blood on her lip while a senator’s wife learned Elena was not the mistress.

She was family.

The word did not comfort her.

Family had not protected Grace.

Family had not found Elena.

Family had not stopped Victoria’s hand.

Adrian finally looked at Elena with something like recognition.

Not full understanding.

Not apology.

Something smaller.

Dread mixed with grief.

Elena did not move toward him.

She stayed beside Grace’s coffin.

If Adrian Hale was her brother, he was still a stranger.

And strangers did not get to claim her before explaining why she had been hidden.
