Chapter 21 - MAYA GOES BACK TO THE KITCHENFor months, Maya avoided cooking.

Not because she feared ovens.

Because cooking had become proof.

Mom’s proof of wifehood.

Family proof of recovery.

Maya wanted none of it.

We ate freezer meals.

Takeout.

Simple food.

At three months postpartum, she made scrambled eggs.

I walked into the kitchen.

Started helping automatically.

She said:

“I’ve got it.”

I froze.

Then:

“Okay.”

She smiled.

Not because eggs mattered.

Because I did not decide assistance was required.

Choice again.

Later she made roasted chicken.

Same smell.

I nearly lost my appetite.

She noticed.

“Michael.”

“I’m fine.”

“Do you want something else?”

“No.”

May you like

We ate it.

Food became food again.
