Chapter 26 - CONTROLLED CONTACTEighteen months after Noah’s birth, Maya agreed to one supervised visit.

Public park.

Thirty minutes.

Linda arrived early.

No gifts because the therapist had advised against turning the visit into restitution shopping.

No insistence on holding Noah.

He was a toddler by then.

Walked like a drunk penguin.

Linda knelt.

“Hi, Noah.”

He hid behind my leg.

She waited.

Eventually he approached because she had a leaf.

Children have priorities.

Maya stood beside me.

Mom did not mention dinner.

Hospital.

Court.

Not in front of Noah.

Good.

At the end, Linda asked Maya:

“May I hug you?”

Maya said:

“No.”

Mom inhaled.

Then:

“Okay.”

That single word may have been the clearest sign therapy had accomplished something.

No:

Why not?

No:

After everything?

No tears designed as pressure.

Okay.

We scheduled another visit two months later.

May you like

Not because Linda earned a prize.

Because Maya and I chose it.
