Chapter 23 - LINDA’S FIRST REAL APOLOGYMom’s first apologies were useless.

“I’m sorry you both misunderstood my intentions.”

No.

“I’m sorry Maya got sick while I was there.”

No.

“I’m sorry Michael reacted so badly.”

Spectacularly no.

Then therapy stripped away some armor.

Seven months after Noah’s birth, she wrote Maya directly.

You told me you were not going to cook. I decided your answer was weakness rather than a decision I needed to respect.

Maya kept reading.

You told me you were dizzy. I minimized it.

Then:

You tried to call Michael. I unplugged the speaker because I believed he would overreact. That was not my decision to make.

Good.

Then:

You told me your head hurt and you were seeing spots. You asked me to call him. I refused.

No excuse.

Finally:

When you collapsed, I was ashamed and afraid, and instead of immediately going to you I told myself you were performing. I am sorry.

Maya cried.

Not forgiveness.

May you like

Recognition.

There is relief in hearing someone describe what happened without forcing you to carry their version too.
