Chapter 10

No paramedics entered the room yet.

Elena did not wake.

The baby was not delivered.

No inheritance scheme was fully exposed.

No one was arrested.

The officer simply held the doorway, radio in hand, making sure the living room remained exactly as it was until help arrived and evidence could not walk out with the people who arranged the funeral.

Marcus stood trapped near the hall, whiskey glass abandoned by the fireplace.

Daniel’s mother stood beside the coffin, pearls shaking against her black dress, eyes fixed on Elena’s faintly moving belly.

Daniel remained over his wife.

One hand near her pulse.

One hand resting lightly beside the funeral cloth, careful, protective, unwilling to let anyone touch her again.

The bruise near Elena’s temple darkened beneath the warm mansion light.

Daniel looked at it.

Then at the coffin.

Then at the hidden documents near the funeral program.

Then at Marcus, who had tried to leave the moment Elena’s pulse was found.

Then at his mother, whose first command had not been save her.

It had been close the coffin.

The truth did not arrive complete.

It arrived in pieces.

A false death.

A rushed funeral.

A living pulse.

A moving child.

A bruise.

A brother backing toward the exit.

A mother terrified by survival.

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

His grief had become something colder.

Something that would wait, watch, and remember every face in the room.

The officer’s voice cut through the silence.

“No one leaves this room.”

Marcus swallowed.

Daniel’s mother looked at her son with a fear she could no longer hide.

And Daniel Hale finally understood the possibility too terrible to speak aloud.

Elena had not simply been mistaken for dead.

Someone in this room may have placed her inside that coffin while she was still alive.
