Chapter 7

Marcus began bargaining with the officer.

Not openly.

Carefully.

“Officer, this is a private family medical matter,” he said.

The officer did not move.

“A woman with a pulse is lying in a coffin,” he replied. “That is not private.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

Daniel’s mother whispered his name.

A warning.

Not comfort.

Marcus heard it and stopped.

Daniel watched that exchange.

There it was.

Coordination.

Fear moving between them without words.

The same kind of silent agreement Daniel had seen in boardrooms when men decided who would carry blame.

His mother stepped nearer to Marcus, but the officer lifted one hand.

“Stay where you are, ma’am.”

She froze.

Daniel looked at the family portrait above the fireplace.

His father, long dead.

His mother seated like a queen.

Daniel and Marcus standing on either side.

Elena had never been in that portrait.

His mother always said they would commission a new one after the baby came.

Now Daniel wondered whether she had ever intended Elena to be part of the family image at all.

A faint sound came from Elena.

Not waking.

Not speech.

Only air struggling through her body.

Daniel bent close.

“Elena, I’m here.”

Her belly shifted again beneath the cloth.

The baby’s movement was stronger than her breath.

Daniel swallowed hard.

His mother looked away quickly.

Too quickly.

Marcus whispered, “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

The words were low.

Almost lost under the fire.

But Daniel heard them.

So did the officer.

Daniel’s head lifted slowly.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?”

Marcus’s face went blank with terror.
