Chapter 5

Daniel had spent sixteen hours believing he had failed Elena.

That he had been too far away.

That he had missed her final breath because a business deal had kept him in the UAE.

That guilt had nearly destroyed him on the flight home.

Now guilt transformed into fury.

Not loud.

Not reckless.

Focused.

He looked at the officer.

“Her breathing is shallow. She’s pregnant. She may have a head injury. We need medical support immediately.”

The officer nodded into his radio, repeating details.

Daniel’s mother whispered, “Please don’t make this public.”

Daniel turned.

That was the wrong thing for her to say.

Not help her.

Not save them.

Not is she alive?

Please don’t make this public.

Daniel stepped closer to the coffin, placing his body between Elena and everyone else.

Marcus saw the movement and understood he had lost access.

“Daniel, think,” he said. “If this gets out, the family—”

“The family what?”

Marcus stopped.

Daniel waited.

The fireplace popped softly behind them.

The officer’s radio crackled.

Outside, somewhere beyond the curtains, a car passed along the suburban street.

The mansion remained warm and beautiful, full of expensive furniture and old portraits, but suddenly Daniel saw it as something colder.

A stage.

His mother near the coffin.

Marcus by the fireplace.

The whiskey glass.

The waiting funeral cloth.

The officer called for order.

Elena’s breath came faintly.

Daniel’s hands trembled, but his voice did not.

“If she dies because anyone delayed help, no name in this house will protect you.”

His mother flinched.

Marcus looked toward the hallway again.

The officer shifted to block more of the doorway.

No one had been arrested.

No one had confessed.
