Chapter 8

The officer reached for his radio again.

“Need immediate medical response, possible criminal circumstances, pregnant female alive but unresponsive.”

Daniel heard the phrase possible criminal circumstances and felt the room tighten.

His mother gripped the edge of a side table.

Marcus looked trapped now.

Not guilty in the legal sense.

Not yet.

But trapped by the fact that Elena was breathing.

A living victim changes every story.

Dead people can be spoken over.

Living people can wake.

Living people can remember.

Living people can contradict the elegant black dress, the whiskey glass, the arranged grief, and the rushed coffin.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You told me she died in childbirth.”

She said nothing.

“You told me the baby was gone.”

Still nothing.

“You told me not to come straight here. You told me to wait for the funeral director.”

Her face paled.

The officer turned slightly toward her.

Marcus muttered, “Daniel, stop.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice cracked for the first time.

“No. I am done stopping.”

Elena’s hand twitched faintly.

Not waking.

Not enough.

But enough to make Daniel inhale sharply.

He touched her fingers carefully.

“I’m here.”

His mother took a step forward involuntarily.

The officer blocked her with his arm.

“Back.”

She stopped.

Her eyes were on Elena’s hand.

And for the first time, Daniel saw what looked like hatred beneath her fear.

Not shock.

Not grief.

Hatred that Elena had moved.

May you like

Hatred that the coffin had not stayed silent.
