Chapter 9

Daniel saw the documents on the side table then.

Partly hidden beneath a folded funeral program.

A pen.

An envelope.

A legal seal.

He did not touch them.

Not yet.

The officer saw his gaze and moved closer to the table.

Marcus noticed and lunged half a step.

“No.”

The officer turned instantly.

Marcus stopped.

Too late.

Daniel stared at him.

“What is that?”

Marcus’s lips parted.

His mother closed her eyes.

Daniel felt the answer before anyone spoke.

Not the full plot.

Not the details.

Not names, clauses, signatures, inheritance transfers, or family holdings.

Only the outline.

Something had needed Elena dead.

Or silent.

Or legally absent.

Something connected to the baby.

The house.

The family.

The timing of Daniel’s trip.

The speed of the coffin.

The lie about childbirth.

The bruise.

The darkened corners of the story.

Daniel’s hands curled against the coffin edge.

His mother whispered, “You don’t understand what was at stake.”

Daniel looked at her.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

“What was at stake?”

She realized her mistake immediately.

Marcus whispered, “Mom.”

The officer’s eyes sharpened.

Daniel leaned closer, voice low and furious.

“My wife is alive inside a coffin. My child is moving beneath a funeral cloth. Do not tell me about stakes.”

His mother’s face broke.

Not into remorse.

Into fear.

Daniel finally saw it clearly.

She was not afraid Elena would die.

She was afraid Elena would live.
