Chapter 4

The bruise near Elena’s temple changed everything.
Daniel found it when he brushed her hair aside.
Dark.
Small.
Partly hidden.
Not the kind of mark grief invents.
Not the kind of injury his mother had mentioned.
He stared at it until his breathing turned slow and dangerous.
“What happened to her head?”
His mother’s voice came too fast.
“She fell.”
Marcus said at the same time, “She hit the bedframe.”
The two answers collided in the warm room.
The officer’s eyes moved from mother to son.
Daniel did not look away.
“Which one?”
Neither answered.
Elena’s fingers lay limp against the satin lining. Her wedding ring was still on, but turned inward, as if someone had twisted her hand while arranging it.
Daniel noticed that too.
The funeral cloth had been placed carefully.
Too carefully.
Her hair spread neatly.
Her nightgown smoothed.
Her pregnant belly covered as if the child inside her was an inconvenience to hide, not a life to save.
Daniel looked toward the closed curtains.
“Who called the doctor?”
His mother whispered, “There was no time.”
“There was time to put her in a coffin.”
The sentence landed like a slap.
Marcus took one step forward, anger returning because fear needed a disguise.
“You have no idea what we went through while you were overseas.”
Daniel’s eyes burned.
“I know exactly what I’m looking at.”
The officer spoke then, stern and low.
“Everyone stays where they are.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Daniel’s mother folded her hands, trying to recover her elegance.
But her eyes kept dropping to Elena’s belly.
Not with grief.
May you like
With dread.
