Dominic Hale had built his life on appearances.
The right suit.
The right watch.
The right wife when investors were watching.
The right mistress when he thought no one important could see.
Vivienne learned early that Dominic did not love people.
He positioned them.
At first, she believed ambition was harmless. He was charming, focused, hungry for success. He spoke of legacy as if building one were noble.
Then she realized legacy, to Dominic, meant ownership.
He owned stories.
He owned rooms.
He owned the version of marriage guests were allowed to see.
When Sophia was born, Vivienne thought he might soften.
For a few months, he did.
He held the baby near the nursery window. He whispered promises about giving her everything. He cried once when Sophia wrapped her tiny fingers around his thumb.
Then ambition returned sharper than before.
Dominic’s company grew, but so did his resentment.
Vivienne had old money in her name, but she never used it to control him. That offended him more than if she had. He wanted access, but he hated gratitude. He wanted the Sterling advantage without admitting the Hale empire depended on it.
Victor saw through him from the beginning.
Vivienne’s older brother never liked Dominic.
“He speaks to you like a man testing locks,” Victor once said.
Vivienne defended her husband then.
“He’s under pressure.”
Victor looked at her quietly.
“Pressure reveals structure.”
She did not understand until years later.
The gala was supposed to be Dominic’s triumph.
A corporate celebration at a Manhattan estate he claimed was “his venue, his network, his night.”
Vivienne helped choose Sophia’s dress.
She believed they were attending as a family.
Then, thirty minutes before guests arrived, Dominic told them to stay upstairs.
“Not tonight,” he said. “It’s complicated.”
Vivienne stared at him.
“What’s complicated about your wife and daughter attending your gala?”
Dominic looked toward the door.
Because Chloe was already downstairs.
