Chapter 3

Sophia was the first to understand something was wrong.

Children often do.

Not the full truth.

Just the feeling.

She stood in the upstairs sitting room wearing her pink princess gown, holding Vivienne’s hand while muffled music rose from the ballroom below.

“Daddy doesn’t want us downstairs?” she asked.

Vivienne bent down and adjusted the small tiara in her daughter’s hair.

“Daddy is confused tonight.”

“Did I do something bad?”

The question nearly broke her.

“No, sweetheart. Never.”

Dominic entered then, impatient.

“Vivienne, please. I don’t have time for this.”

“For what?”

“For drama.”

She looked at him in disbelief.

“Our daughter asked why you don’t want her at your event.”

Dominic lowered his voice.

“There are investors downstairs. I need the evening clean.”

Clean.

Vivienne stood.

“What does that make us?”

He looked away.

That answer was enough.

Then they heard applause from below.

A speech began.

Dominic’s voice, amplified through the ballroom speakers, warm and polished.

“Tonight is about family, loyalty, and the future we build together.”

Sophia smiled faintly at the sound of him.

Then another voice joined.

Chloe’s son laughing near the microphone.

A guest said loudly, “Beautiful family, Dominic.”

Vivienne froze.

Sophia’s smile vanished.

“Mommy?”

Vivienne took her daughter’s hand.

She did not scream.

She did not cry.

She walked to the door.

Dominic blocked her.

“Don’t.”

Vivienne looked at him.

“You brought another woman’s child downstairs while hiding yours upstairs?”

His jaw tightened.

“You are making this ugly.”

“No,” she said. “You did.”

That was when Victor’s call came through on her phone.

He was already in the building.

Sterling security had already entered the estate.

And Dominic’s carefully staged evening had begun collapsing before Vivienne even reached the staircase.
