Chapter 5

The first thing the guests saw was not the folder.

It was Sophia.

A six-year-old girl in a sparkling pink gown stepping onto the marble floor with her mother’s hand wrapped around hers.

The sight changed the temperature of the gala.

People who had just toasted Dominic’s “beautiful family” looked toward Chloe.

Then toward her son.

Then back to the little girl who had Dominic’s eyes and Vivienne’s posture.

Chloe understood the shift instantly.

Her confidence faltered.

She had believed Dominic when he said Vivienne was “not part of the public life anymore.”

She had believed him when he said the marriage was only a legal shell.

She had believed, or pretended to believe, that standing beside him at the gala meant she had been chosen.

But Sophia was not a legal shell.

Sophia was a child.

And every guest could see her looking at her father with confused hope and hurt.

Dominic tried to move toward the microphone.

Victor’s security executive stepped into his path.

Not aggressively.

Professionally.

Dominic shoved his hand away.

That was enough for the officers to close in.

No one was attacked.

No one was thrown to the floor.

But Dominic resisted being redirected, and the officers restrained him before the confrontation reached the guests.

That was the frozen moment the room would remember.

Vivienne walking forward.

Sophia beside her.

Victor behind them.

Dominic held back in his own gala.

Chloe pale beneath the chandeliers.

And the truth finally occupying the center of the room.

“Vivienne, call them off!” Dominic shouted.

He still thought she was the one who needed to help him.

That was his mistake.

Vivienne turned slowly.

“You introduced another woman and her son as your family.”

The sentence did not need details.
