Chloe stepped forward because silence was becoming dangerous.
“She has no authority here!”
Her voice cracked slightly on the last word.
Authority.
Vivienne almost smiled at that.
Not because it was funny.
Because Chloe had chosen the one word Dominic should have feared most.
For years, Vivienne had avoided authority.
She did not use the Sterling name to punish him.
Did not call her brother after every insult.
Did not threaten board seats when Dominic stayed out late.
Did not remind him who financed the early structure that saved his company during its first failure.
She believed love should not be enforced through power.
Dominic mistook restraint for weakness.
Chloe mistook invisibility for irrelevance.
Victor moved beside Vivienne.
The guests parted without being asked.
He removed the black folder from his jacket and looked directly at Dominic.
“This estate and your company answer to Sterling Capital.”
Dominic’s face changed.
Not because he understood everything.

A few men near the front exchanged looks.

Another lowered his champagne glass.

“She told you she owned it?” she demanded.

“No one said owned.”

Vivienne looked at Sophia.
