PART 1

“He lifted the blanket from his pregnant wife… and saw the bruises his own mother told her to hide.”

Julian Mercer had seen Mariana cry before.

He had seen her cry at their wedding when she walked down the aisle.

He had seen her cry the day they heard their baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

But he had never seen her cry the way she cried that night.

Not silently.

Not politely.

Not with that terrified, trapped look in her eyes.

It was nearly midnight in their Chicago high-rise apartment.

The city lights outside the bedroom windows glowed gold and cold against the glass.

Mariana had told him she was tired.

She had told him her legs were swelling from pregnancy.

She had told him not to worry.

For three weeks, Julian had believed her.

For three weeks, he had believed his mother too.

Carmen Mercer had stood in the kitchen every morning with perfect hair, perfect pearls, and perfect control, telling him the same thing.

“She’s emotional.”

“She’s dramatic.”

“She wants attention.”

“It’s pregnancy.”

Julian had hated how often Mariana flinched lately.

He had hated the way she stiffened whenever Carmen entered a room.

He had hated the silence that had settled over his home like smoke.

But he had kept telling himself things would calm down after the baby came.

Then that night Mariana whimpered in her sleep.

He woke instantly.

The bedside lamp painted soft amber over the bed.

Her face was wet with tears.

One hand clutched her belly.

The other gripped the blanket so tightly her knuckles looked white.

“Mariana,” he whispered.

She jerked awake like someone had caught her doing something wrong.

“No,” she said too quickly.

“I’m fine.”

“Don’t.”

Don’t.

Not I’m okay.

Not help me.

Just don’t.

That single word made his blood run cold.

Julian sat up and touched her shoulder gently.

She trembled.

Not because of pain.

Because of fear.

“Look at me,” he said.

When she finally did, he felt something inside him shift.

She looked guilty.

Like a prisoner who had broken a rule.

“What are you hiding from me?”

Mariana shook her head and tried to pull the blanket down harder over her legs.

Julian caught the edge before she could.

“Julian, please.”

“Mariana.”

He lifted the blanket.

The room stopped breathing.

Dark bruises bloomed across both her thighs.

Old yellowing marks mixed with fresh blue-black ones.

Finger marks.

Shoe-shaped smudges.

One angry red scrape near her knee.

Another bruise just below the curve of her swollen belly.

His hands began to shake.

“Mariana… who did this to you?”

She turned her face away and cried harder.

For a second, he thought she would stay silent.

Then her lips parted.

“Your mother told me to hide it.”

The words slammed into him so hard he almost didn’t hear the sharp intake of breath from the bedroom doorway.

Carmen was standing there in her silk robe.

“She’s lying,” Carmen snapped.

“She fell.”

Julian rose so fast the mattress shook.

His whole body went rigid.

Mariana grabbed his hand with trembling fingers.

“Don’t you dare blame her again,” he said.

Carmen’s expression shifted for one second.

Just one.

But it was enough.

Julian saw it.

Not concern.

Not shock.

Fear.

Then Mariana broke.

“She said if I told you,” Mariana sobbed, “she’d make sure the baby never came home.”

Julian slowly turned toward his mother.

And for the first time in his life, Carmen Mercer looked small.
