PART 6

Carmen did not scream when she realized she was cornered.

She did something far more dangerous.

She smiled.

It was a thin, brittle smile, but Julian knew it well.

It was the face she wore when she had decided to wound instead of defend.

She picked up her handbag from the foyer bench.

She slid on her gloves.

Then she looked at Mariana and said, “You think you’ve won because he saw bruises.”

Her gaze shifted to Julian.

“You still know nothing.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Get out.”

Carmen laughed softly.

“Ask your wife why she erased the message from my phone.”

“Ask her why she begged me not to tell you what happened at that clinic.”

“Ask her why the doctor there warned us both about complications.”

Mariana went white.

Julian turned instantly.

“What message?”

“What complication?”

Carmen took satisfaction in the silence.

“That’s what I thought.”

Denise stepped in.

“Mrs. Mercer, if you have something relevant to say, say it clearly.”

Carmen lifted her chin.

“The clinic doctor said the baby was under stress.”

“He said if Mariana did not calm down, she could trigger early labor.”

“I told her to stop these emotional episodes.”

“That is not abuse.”

“That is protecting my grandchild.”

Mariana shook her head hard enough to send tears flying.

“No.”

“No, that’s not what happened.”

Julian moved to her side.

“Tell me.”

Her voice trembled.

“At the clinic, the doctor said stress was dangerous.”

“He told me I needed rest.”

“He asked if I felt safe at home.”

“I started crying.”

“Before I could answer, Carmen said I was dramatic and overreacting.”

“Afterward, in the parking garage, she took my phone.”

“She said if I ever repeated that conversation, she would tell you I was unstable and trying to frame her.”

“She typed a message to herself from my phone.”

“She made it sound like I apologized.”

Julian stared at her.

“You erased it?”

Mariana nodded miserably.

“I did later.”

“I was terrified you’d find it and believe her.”

Denise exhaled slowly.

“Classic coercive control.”

Carmen snapped, “I am standing right here.”

“And still proving my point,” Denise replied.

Julian felt both sick and furious.

There it was again.

Another piece of the trap.

Not just violence.

Narrative.

Paper trail.

Preemptive damage.

His mother had been building a case against Mariana in case she ever fought back.

He looked at Carmen with something colder than rage.

He looked at her with recognition.

Not of his mother.

Of an enemy.

“I want every call, every message, every clinic record subpoenaed,” he told Denise.

“Today.”

Carmen’s confidence flickered.

“You would drag your family through public disgrace?”

Julian did not blink.

“You did that the first time you touched her.”

Mariana leaned against the sofa cushion, exhausted.

Dr. Kaplan crouched beside her and quietly suggested that she be admitted for observation.

Julian agreed immediately.

When the nurse left to arrange transport, Carmen tried one last time to reclaim control.

She stepped toward Mariana with tears in her eyes.

Not real tears.

Beautiful ones.

“I only wanted what was best for the baby,” she whispered.

Mariana recoiled so violently Dr. Kaplan had to steady her.

That was the end.

Julian opened the front door.

“Leave.”

“If you contact my wife directly again, you will do it through counsel.”

“If you come near the hospital, I will have you removed.”

“And if you lie once more, I will make sure every board, every charity, every friend you have knows exactly what you are.”

Carmen’s face twisted.

For one second she looked almost monstrous.

Then she walked out.

The apartment door shut behind her.

And Mariana finally collapsed into Julian’s arms.
