PART 3
Carmen had always won with volume, polish, and confidence.
She knew how to turn outrage into authority.
She knew how to make other people feel childish for questioning her.
She knew exactly how to stare at a person until they doubted their own memory.
But that night, something in Julian had broken.
Maybe it was the sight of Mariana clutching her belly while trying not to cry too loudly.
Maybe it was the pattern of the bruises, too deliberate to excuse away.
Maybe it was the realization that his mother had used his own trust against his wife.
Whatever it was, the son who usually calmed situations down was gone.
In his place stood a man who had just realized he had failed the person he loved most.
Carmen stepped farther into the room anyway.
“She fell on the stairs two days ago,” she said.
“She begged me not to upset you because you were in the middle of that investor meeting.”
Mariana made a sound that was halfway between a laugh and a sob.
“No,” she whispered.
“No, that was after you pushed me.”
Julian turned so sharply the bed frame creaked.
“What?”
Carmen’s face hardened.
“She almost slipped because she refuses to watch where she’s going.”
Mariana’s hand tightened around Julian’s wrist.
“She cornered me by the laundry room.”
“She said I was turning you against her.”
“She pushed me into the wall.”
“When I cried, she said if I wanted to keep living here, I’d learn to stop looking pathetic.”
Julian stared at his mother as if he had never seen her before.
“Tell me she’s lying.”
Carmen folded her arms.
“She is emotional and unstable.”
“She is pregnant.”
“She exaggerates.”
“And frankly, she has been trying to manipulate you from the beginning.”
That did it.
Julian crossed the room in two steps.
Not toward Mariana.
Toward the door.
He opened it and pointed into the hallway.
“Leave.”
Carmen laughed once, disbelieving.
“You are asking your own mother to leave your home because of one hysterical accusation?”
Julian’s voice dropped into something more dangerous than shouting.
“I am telling you to leave my wife’s bedroom before I call building security and have you escorted out.”
That silenced her.
For the first time in Julian’s life, Carmen looked at him and realized obedience was no longer on the table.
She tried one last angle.
“Julian, sweetheart, think carefully.”
“If you do this, you will regret it.”
“I am the only one protecting this family.”
Mariana flinched again at the word regret.
Julian noticed.
He noticed everything now.
“What does that mean?” he asked quietly.
Carmen said nothing.
Julian looked back at Mariana.
Her lips trembled.
Tears slid down into her hair.
“She said if I ever told you,” Mariana whispered, “she would tell everyone I was unstable.”
“She said she would have doctors say I was too emotional to care for the baby.”
“She said your family’s lawyers would make sure I never took my child home.”
The air left Julian’s lungs.
He knew his mother.
He knew her connections.
The charity boards.
The hospital trustees.
The attorneys at every dinner party.
For the first time, he understood what those connections could become in the wrong hands.
Carmen must have seen recognition in his face, because she straightened and said coldly, “You have no idea what stress can do to a pregnant woman in court.”
Julian opened the bedroom door wider.
“Get out.”
“Julian—”
“Now.”
Carmen held his gaze for three long seconds.
Then she turned and walked out.
Not defeated.
Not yet.
But furious.
The moment she disappeared into the hall, Julian locked the bedroom door.
Then he came back to the bed and dropped to his knees beside Mariana.
“I’m sorry,” he said, and his voice cracked so badly it barely sounded like him.
“I’m so sorry.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Why didn’t I see it?”
Mariana cupped her shaking hand over his.
May you like
“Because every time I tried,” she whispered, “she got worse.”
