PART 8

Robert Mercer received Julian in his office with the composure of a man who believed himself untouchable.

Dark wood shelves.

Old family portraits.

A decanter untouched on the sideboard.

The smell of expensive paper and older secrets.

Robert looked up from his desk and smiled faintly.

“Julian.”

“How is Mariana?”

Julian did not sit.

“Don’t.”

Robert’s smile faded.

“Excuse me?”

“Don’t pretend concern.”

“I know you were advising my mother.”

For one split second Robert’s expression changed.

It was enough.

“You have always been impulsive,” Robert said.

“If you’re here to accuse me, I suggest you come with more than emotion.”

Julian stepped closer and put the folder Denise had prepared onto the desk.

Clinic notes.

Security stills.

Phone logs.

Preliminary legal findings.

Robert read none of it.

He only looked at Julian.

“That girl has poisoned you,” he said softly.

Julian leaned forward.

“No.”

“She survived you.”

Robert’s voice stayed calm.

“Your mother feared for the Mercer line.”

“You married below your station.”

“Then you let that woman become the emotional center of your decisions.”

“She is unstable.”

“She isolates you.”

“She makes everything personal.”

Julian laughed in disbelief.

“You just described my mother.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

That was the first crack.

Julian pressed harder.

“You advised her on guardianship.”

“You talked strategy while my pregnant wife was being threatened in my home.”

“You thought you could take my child and hide it under trust law.”

Robert rose from his chair.

“If Mariana were declared unfit, the child would remain within the Mercer family.”

“That would be protection, not theft.”

Julian’s vision flashed white with fury.

“You were planning to steal my baby from his mother.”

Robert did not answer.

He did not have to.

Julian had his answer.

By evening, Denise had filed for emergency restraining orders against Carmen and Robert.

She also made a recommendation Julian never expected to hear.

“Go public first.”

“If they lose social cover, they lose leverage.”

“People like this survive in silence.”

So Julian did something the old version of himself never would have done.

He called a family meeting at the Mercer foundation house.

Board members.

Family trustees.

The estate attorney.

And, at Mariana’s insistence, only after making sure she was strong enough to attend by secure video from the hospital.

Carmen arrived in ivory.

Robert arrived irritated.

Neither of them expected to see police standing discreetly near the back wall or Denise seated beside the foundation attorney.

Julian stood at the head of the table.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not plead.

He simply told the truth.

He played the footage.

He read the clinic note.

He described the guardianship inquiry.

Then he turned the screen toward the trustees so they could see Mariana in her hospital bed, pale and bruised, one hand over her belly.

The room went dead silent.

Carmen finally snapped.

“She manipulated all of you!”

Mariana looked straight into the camera.

“No.”

“You just ran out of rooms where no one could hear me.”

That line ended everything.
