PART 5

At seven the next morning, Julian’s lawyer was in the apartment.

So was Dr. Kaplan.

So was a private nurse.

And, at Julian’s instruction, so was a female security specialist from his company who knew exactly how to preserve camera footage and digital evidence.

Carmen emerged from the guest suite dressed like a woman heading to a brunch fundraiser.

Cream slacks.

Silk blouse.

Diamond studs.

The picture of offended dignity.

She stopped cold when she saw the strangers.

“What is this?”

Julian stood by the dining table with his phone in his hand and a legal pad in front of him.

“This,” he said, “is the part where everyone stops lying for you.”

Mariana sat on the living room sofa wrapped in a soft blanket while Dr. Kaplan examined her injuries privately behind a temporary screen.

Every few seconds Julian heard her inhale sharply.

Every sound cut through him like wire.

Carmen looked toward the screen and scoffed.

“She is humiliating this family.”

Julian’s lawyer, Denise Walker, glanced up.

“No, Mrs. Mercer.”

“You did that yourself.”

Carmen turned on her heel.

“I will not stand here and be insulted in my son’s home.”

Julian’s voice was ice.

“It’s not your son’s home.”

“It’s mine and Mariana’s.”

“And you are leaving it today.”

Before Carmen could answer, the security specialist spoke from the console table where she had set up a laptop.

“Mr. Mercer, I pulled retained clips from the internal system.”

Carmen went still.

Julian noticed.

So did Denise.

“The cameras were active?”

Denise asked.

Carmen recovered fast.

“Of course they were.”

“For security.”

The specialist clicked her mouse.

“There are gaps.”

“Several recordings were manually deleted.”

“But backup cache still retained partial files.”

Julian stared at the screen.

A timestamp.

A hallway near the laundry room.

Mariana stepping backward.

Carmen moving toward her.

The angle was imperfect.

There was no audio.

But the motion was enough.

Carmen shoved.

Mariana hit the wall.

Julian felt the room narrow.

Then another clip.

Kitchen.

Mariana dropping a cup.

Carmen striking her face.

Another.

Living area.

Carmen jabbing a finger into Mariana’s shoulder while Mariana held her belly and retreated.

Denise slowly closed her folder.

“Well,” she said.

“That’s assault.”

Carmen’s face had lost all color.

“She provoked me.”

Julian laughed once.

A terrible sound.

“You hit my pregnant wife and you think provocation is your defense?”

Mariana emerged from behind the screen with Dr. Kaplan at her side.

Her face was pale but composed.

Dr. Kaplan looked straight at Julian.

“She has bruising in multiple stages of healing.”

“She’s also showing signs of stress that are not safe during pregnancy.”

“She should not remain in the same environment as the source of that stress.”

Julian turned to Carmen.

“You heard the doctor.”

But Carmen was no longer looking at him.

She was staring at Mariana.

And in that stare was something colder than anger.

Hatred.

“You ungrateful little liar,” Carmen said.

Julian moved between them so fast the chair behind him scraped the floor.

“Say one more word to her.”

“Please.”

“I dare you.”

Carmen’s mouth closed.

Denise rose.

“Mrs. Mercer, you are now on notice.”

“You are to leave this residence immediately.”

“You are to have no unsupervised contact with Mrs. Mercer.”

“And if my client chooses to pursue criminal charges, this footage will be preserved.”

Carmen looked at her son.

“Criminal charges?”

“Against your own mother?”

Julian held her gaze.

May you like

“Yes.”
