PART 4

Julian sat beside Mariana until her breathing steadied.

The city outside kept moving.

Traffic lights changed.

Cars slid through the streets below.

Somewhere in another apartment, someone laughed.

The world had not stopped.

Only theirs had.

He brought her water.

He called her obstetrician’s emergency line.

He texted his assistant and canceled everything for the next day.

Then he came back to the bed, pulled the blanket carefully over Mariana’s bruised legs, and said the words that made her go pale.

“What else haven’t you told me?”

For a moment she looked like she might deny it.

Then she closed her eyes.

“I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you’d hate me for waiting.”

“I could never hate you.”

She gave him a shattered little smile.

“You shouldn’t promise things tonight.”

Julian took her hand.

“Tell me anyway.”

Mariana stared at the ceiling.

“Three weeks ago, I had bleeding.”

His whole body tensed.

“What?”

“It was light.”

“I panicked.”

“Carmen told me not to call you because you were in New York.”

“She drove me to a private clinic instead.”

Julian felt his stomach twist.

“What clinic?”

“I don’t know.”

“She said it was one of her doctor friends.”

“They checked the baby.”

“He was okay.”

“But on the way home she told me if I embarrassed the family again, she would make sure next time no one helped me in time.”

Julian stopped breathing for a second.

“She threatened the baby?”

Mariana looked at him then, truly looked at him, with all the terror she had spent weeks swallowing.

“She said women like me used pregnancy as a weapon.”

“She said if I wanted my child safe, I would learn silence.”

Julian stood so fast the chair beside the bed toppled over.

He paced once to the window and back.

He wanted to break something.

He wanted to drag his mother out of the guest room and demand an explanation until the whole building heard him.

Instead he forced himself to kneel beside Mariana again.

She did not need noise.

She needed safety.

“I’m calling Dr. Kaplan,” he said.

“Now.”

“And tomorrow we’re going to the hospital.”

“You’re getting photographed, examined, everything documented.”

“I’m not letting anyone near you again.”

Mariana’s face crumpled.

Not from fear this time.

From relief so raw it hurt to watch.

“I kept waiting for you to choose her,” she whispered.

That nearly broke him more than the bruises had.

“Mariana,” he said, taking both her hands, “I chose you the day I married you.”

“I was just too blind to protect you.”

“That ends tonight.”

He helped her sit up.

She winced.

The movement had clearly hurt more than she wanted to admit.

“How many times?” he asked softly.

Her silence answered first.

Then she said, “I stopped counting after six.”

Six.

Six times his mother had put her hands on his pregnant wife.

Six times Mariana had hidden it.

Six times he had kissed her forehead and told her she seemed tired.

A knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Both of them froze.

“Julian,” Carmen called from the other side, her tone maddeningly composed, “we need to discuss this rationally.”

Julian walked to the door but did not open it.

“No.”

“You need to leave the apartment.”

“This is absurd.”

“It is two in the morning.”

“You have one hour.”

A pause.

Then Carmen said, low and poisonous, “You are making the biggest mistake of your life.”

Julian rested his forehead briefly against the door.

“No, Mother.”

“The biggest mistake of my life was trusting you around my family.”

When he turned back, Mariana was crying silently into the pillow.

Not because she was afraid anymore.

May you like

Because for the first time, someone had finally believed her.
