Chapter 1 - The Suitcase at 2 A.M.

Husband Packs His Secret Escape At 2 AM But His Wife Reveals She Switched The Drugged Tea And Froze Every Account Before He Could Reach The Airport.
Arthur Vance froze beside the black suitcase.
The bedroom was half dark, half gold.
Cold blue predawn light pressed against the windows, while the bedside lamp cast a warm circle over scattered clothes, open drawers, shoes, and the half-zipped suitcase standing near the closet.
Eleanor sat calmly on the edge of the bed in her burgundy satin nightgown and oversized cream cardigan.
She should have been asleep.
That was what Arthur had counted on.
Her blonde curls fell softly over one shoulder.
Her posture was relaxed.
Her eyes were clear.
In her hand, she held a smartphone angled toward him.
On the screen was an airport photograph.
Arthur and Sienna Brooks.
Close enough to remove every lie.
Sienna’s sunglasses hid her eyes, but not the intimacy of her body leaning toward Arthur’s shoulder.
Arthur stared at the phone.
Then at Eleanor.
His hand tightened around the suitcase handle.
“You were supposed to be unconscious.”
Eleanor’s smile barely moved.
Not shocked.
Not broken.
Almost amused.
She lowered the phone slightly and reached toward the nightstand.
Two teacups sat there.
One empty.
One untouched.
She lifted the second cup between careful fingers and tilted it just enough for him to understand.
“I switched our cups.”
Arthur’s face changed.
The bedroom air seemed to drop ten degrees.
His eyes darted to the cup, then to the door, then back to the suitcase.
He yanked the suitcase closer and took one aggressive step forward.
“I’ve already taken everything.”
Eleanor remained seated.
Completely still.
Her thumb touched the phone once.
A silent vibration cut through the room.
She turned the phone face down on the bed, denying him the screen.
“Then explain why every account is frozen.”
Arthur released the suitcase.
It rolled backward and struck the closet door.
The sound was small.
His panic was not.
“What did you do?”
He lunged for the phone.
Eleanor stood first.
Calm.
Upright.
Between him and the bed.
Outside, a faint sweep of vehicle light crossed the bedroom wall.
Arthur saw it.
So did she.
Eleanor glanced toward the window, then back at him with a quiet smile.

And Arthur finally understood his escape had ended before he ever reached the stairs.
