Chapter 4 - Every Account Is Frozen

Arthur’s panic did not come all at once.
It arrived in pieces.
First, his eyes went to the phone.
Then to the suitcase.
Then to the dresser drawer he had emptied.
Then to the closet.
Then back to Eleanor’s face.
He was checking inventory.
Not emotions.
Assets.
Access.
Damage.
Eleanor recognized the sequence because she had spent the past week learning how he thought.
Not how he loved.
That part had become useless.
How he moved money.
How he forwarded documents.
How he booked flights without using shared calendars.
How he changed passwords at midnight and forgot that old devices remained synced long enough to whisper.
She did not reveal the details.
Not now.
Not to him.
She only let him feel the outline.
Every account is frozen.
The phrase had hit him with visible force because it reached the part of him that had believed betrayal was safe if properly funded.
Arthur picked up the suitcase and dropped it onto the bed, trying to reclaim control through noise.
The black case landed near her phone.
Eleanor’s hand moved first.
She placed her palm over the device before he could reach it.
He froze.
Their hands did not touch.
The distance between them was only inches, but it held five years of marriage and one night of attempted erasure.
“Move your hand,” he said.
“No.”
His jaw worked.
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”
Her eyes lifted.
“Your flight?”
His face tightened.
“Your girlfriend?”
A flicker.
“Your transfer?”
A bigger flicker.
“Or the accounts that no longer answer to your password?”
Arthur went pale.
She had not shown proof.
She had not named a bank.
She had not revealed who helped her.
Still, his reaction gave her more than enough.
He straightened slowly.
“You’ve ruined us.”
Eleanor almost smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“Us.”
He looked confused.
She leaned forward slightly.
“You only remember marriage when consequences arrive.”
The words landed softly, which made them crueler.
Arthur’s eyes reddened.
Not with remorse.
With rage.
He reached toward the suitcase again, opened the top compartment, and began searching through papers with shaking hands.
Eleanor watched.
Every movement decisive.
Every breath uncontrolled.
Every fear visible.
The man who planned to leave her unconscious was now losing to a locked account and a phone turned face down on a bed.
Outside, the vehicle light passed the wall again.

This time Arthur noticed it linger longer.
