Chapter 7 - The Phone Face Down

The phone face down on the bed had become Arthur’s obsession.

Even after Eleanor slipped it into her cardigan pocket, he kept glancing at where it had been.

That empty space frightened him.

A visible phone could be grabbed.

A visible screen could be read.

A visible secret could be attacked.

A hidden phone meant unknown calls, unknown evidence, unknown timing.

Eleanor understood the power of not showing him everything.

For years, Arthur had managed information like property.

He told her what she needed to know after decisions were already made.

He explained charges after they appeared.

He described absences after returning.

He called questions distrust and silence maturity.

Tonight, she gave him silence.

He hated it.

“What did you press?” he demanded.

She looked at him.

“When?”

“On the phone.”

Her eyebrows lifted slightly.

“You saw me press one button. You assumed it was one action.”

Arthur’s face drained further.

The answer did not reveal anything.

It multiplied everything.

One touch could lock accounts.

Send a file.

Trigger a call.

Alert a lawyer.

Activate a recording.

Confirm a location.

Forward the airport photograph.

Or do nothing at all.

The not knowing tightened around his throat.

He moved toward the bed too quickly.

Eleanor stepped into his path.

“Move.”

“No.”

His eyes widened.

The simplicity of the refusal made him angrier than shouting.

“You think you’re safe because you froze some money?”

“I think I’m safe because you finally have something to lose.”

Arthur stopped.

That was the real trap.

Not bank access.

Not the phone.

Not the photograph.

Not even the headlights outside.

Loss.

He had believed he could make Eleanor lose everything while he walked away whole.

Now the night had reversed.

His suitcase was packed, but useless.

His mistress was named, but absent.

His accounts were frozen, but unseen.

His wife was awake, but not begging.

His exit was lit by someone waiting outside.

He laughed suddenly.

A brittle, ugly sound.

“You always wanted to punish me.”

Eleanor’s eyes softened with almost pity.

“No. I wanted to believe you.”

That silenced him more completely than anger could have.

For one second, the man who had planned betrayal stood in the ruins of having been trusted.

Then his panic returned.

“What did you do?”

She did not answer.
