Chapter 8 - The Door He Cannot Reach

The bedroom door was only fifteen feet away.

Arthur looked at it like it belonged to another country.

The hallway beyond was dark.

The staircase beyond that led to the foyer.

The front door beyond that led to the driveway, the car, the airport, Sienna, escape.

He had mapped it all earlier in his mind.

Downstairs quietly.

Suitcase wheels lifted over the last step.

Garage door opened manually.

Phone off.

No note.

No explanation until he was unreachable.

But Eleanor was awake.

The accounts were frozen.

The phone was hidden.

The light outside kept returning.

And the woman he planned to leave unconscious now stood between him and the bed, calm enough to terrify.

He grabbed the suitcase handle and angled toward the door.

Eleanor did not block him physically.

She simply watched.

That was worse.

Arthur stopped.

“Why aren’t you stopping me?”

She looked at the suitcase.

“Because you cannot get far with a prop.”

His eyes flashed.

“This is my home.”

“Is it?”

The question hit him in the same place as the frozen accounts.

Ownership.

Control.

Access.

All the words he had treated as permanent suddenly felt conditional.

He looked around the bedroom.

Furniture he had selected with her money.

Closet space he had emptied.

Bed where he expected her to sleep through the end of their marriage.

Nightstand where the switched cup sat like quiet testimony.

His mouth tightened.

“You planned this.”

Eleanor’s smile was faint.

“You planned first.”

He stepped toward her, then stopped himself.

Not because he regretted anything.

Because the vehicle light swept across the wall again, brighter now.

Arthur turned.

His reflection appeared faintly in the window.

Not confident.

Not handsome.

Not the man from the airport photograph.

A frightened husband with a suitcase at 2:00 a.m.

Eleanor watched him see himself.

That was almost enough.

Almost.

From somewhere outside, a car door closed softly.

Arthur heard it.

His whole body went still.

No agents were shown.

No one entered.

No final consequence arrived.

Only the sound beyond the house.
