Chapter 9 - What Did You Do?

Arthur finally asked the question without arrogance.

“What did you do?”

His voice broke on the last word.

Eleanor looked at him.

For a moment, she saw the man she had married beneath the panic: the easy smile, the careful charm, the confidence that once seemed protective instead of predatory.

Then the image vanished.

Because the man in front of her had packed a suitcase while expecting her to lie unconscious in their bed.

He had posed at an airport with another woman.

He had told her too much by trying to take everything.

He had said the sentence that ruined any remaining illusion.

You were supposed to be unconscious.

Eleanor’s face remained composed.

“I woke up.”

Arthur stared.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is the only one you deserve tonight.”

His jaw tightened, but he did not move.

Outside, the faint vehicle light dimmed.

A shadow passed over the bedroom wall and disappeared.

Arthur looked toward the window again.

“Who is out there?”

Eleanor glanced toward the curtains.

Then back at him.

Her smile returned, quiet and unreadable.

“Someone who knows you packed.”

His face went gray.

She did not say lawyer.

She did not say federal agent.

She did not say security.

She did not say investigator.

She did not say anyone’s name.

The suspense remained intact.

But Arthur reacted as if every possible answer had struck him at once.

He reached into his pocket for his own phone.

Eleanor watched.

No service?

No access?

No reply?

Whatever he saw there made his hand shake.

He looked up at her.

“You froze my phone too?”

She did not answer.

His breathing became shallow.

The black suitcase stood beside him, packed and pointless.

The open closet gaped behind him like a mouth.

Scattered clothes and shoes covered the floor, evidence of haste where he had imagined elegance.

Eleanor stepped closer.

Not enough to corner him physically.

Enough to make him understand the room belonged to her now.

“You should sit down, Arthur.”

He stared.

“Why?”

Her eyes moved briefly to the teacup he had drunk from.

Then back to his face.

“Because you look tired.”

The cruelty was quiet.

Perfect.

He understood.

And for the first time, Eleanor saw him afraid of his own plan.
