Chapter 6 - The Suitcase Rolls Back

Arthur reached for the suitcase again.

Not because he had a plan.

Because men like him touched objects when control slipped from people.

The suitcase had been his proof of motion.

Packed clothes.

Shoes.

Travel documents.

A hidden envelope in the side pocket Eleanor had already noticed but not mentioned.

He pulled it toward himself.

The wheels bumped over a shoe on the floor.

The suitcase tipped, corrected, and rolled backward when his grip slipped.

It struck the open closet door.

The sound cracked through the room.

Arthur flinched.

Eleanor did not.

She looked at the suitcase with mild interest.

“You packed lightly for someone who took everything.”

His face twisted.

“Stop repeating that.”

“You said it.”

“I was angry.”

“You were honest.”

He stepped toward her.

“Do you want to know the truth?”

Eleanor’s expression did not change.

“No.”

That stopped him.

He had expected hunger.

A betrayed wife demanding explanations.

A wounded woman begging to know why.

A desperate argument he could twist into mutual blame.

Instead, Eleanor said no.

Arthur stared.

She continued.

“I know enough truth for tonight. The rest belongs somewhere you cannot edit it.”

His eyes went again to the window.

Somewhere.

Someone.

Outside.

He hated that he did not know the full map.

Eleanor stood and moved toward the foot of the bed.

Slow.

Calm.

Keeping space between herself and him, while also staying between him and the phone.

Her cream cardigan fell open over the burgundy satin nightgown, making her look softer than she was.

Arthur misread softness until the end.

He had planned for her body to fail him tonight.

For sleep to swallow her questions.

For morning to find the closet empty and the accounts moved.

Instead, she stood upright in the bedroom at 2:00 a.m., looking at him like a woman watching a thief realize the door no longer opens.

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“Eleanor, we can fix this.”

She looked at him for a long second.

“No, Arthur. You are trying to fix your exit.”

His mouth tightened.

The truth hit too directly.

Outside, another faint light swept across the ceiling.

This time, he took one step away from the window.
