Chapter 4

Gloria Carter never thought of herself as cruel.

Cruelty was for poor people, loud people, people without manners.

Gloria believed in order.

And in her order, Elena had always been temporary.

Too independent.

Too quiet.

Too unwilling to worship Daniel for choosing her.

When Daniel first brought Elena home, Gloria smiled through dinner and told him later, “She has a lawyer’s eyes.”

“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.

“It means she reads before she signs.”

That was the beginning of Gloria’s resentment.

Elena did not flatter.

Did not surrender.

Did not ask permission to own what she had earned.

Worse, she had the apartment.

The one Daniel wanted.

The one Gloria believed should belong to “the family” because Daniel’s career needed a stronger public image.

Gloria began feeding him the language.

A husband should not live in his wife’s property.

Investors notice these things.

Your name should be on everything.

A woman who loves you would not hesitate.

Daniel absorbed it quickly because it sounded like pride.

Then came the larger idea.

Transfer the apartment into a management entity.

Use it as collateral.

Move funds through renovation expenses.

Secure “family liquidity.”

Elena did not know every part.

But she knew enough to refuse.

Gloria hated that refusal more than Daniel did.

So at dinner, when Daniel placed the papers before Elena, Gloria watched like a judge waiting for a sentence.

The plate shattered.

Blood appeared.

Daniel demanded the signature.

And Gloria said the line she had been saving for years.

“You should have learned your place years ago.”

Only after Elena called someone and said, “Bring the warrant,” did Gloria understand the place she had prepared for Elena might now belong to them.

Not as punishment yet.
