Chapter 8

Gloria panicked when Agent Reed asked about the transfer packet.

“I don’t know anything about deeds,” she said too quickly.

Reed looked at her.

“I didn’t ask you a question yet.”

Her face went pale.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

The agents did not react emotionally.

That was their power.

They were not shocked by Gloria’s panic.

Not impressed by Daniel’s anger.

Not distracted by the luxury apartment, the skyline, the expensive table, or the family name attached to the door.

They treated everything as material.

Everything could matter.

The apartment-transfer documents were placed into protective sleeves.

The black pen was photographed.

The table was documented.

The broken plate fragments remained untouched until recorded.

Elena watched from the hall, one hand lightly holding the edge of her blazer closed.

She did not need to understand every detail of the financial investigation to understand one thing.

Daniel and Gloria had not invented the transfer at dinner.

They had arrived at dinner believing the scheme was already nearly complete.

Her signature was not the beginning.

It was meant to be the final layer.

The part that made everything look voluntary.

Agent Reed approached her again.

“Mrs. Carter, did your husband pressure you to sign similar documents before tonight?”

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“At least five.”

“Did your mother-in-law participate?”

Elena looked past him toward Gloria.

Gloria’s eyes pleaded.

Not with remorse.

With fear.

“Yes,” Elena said.

Daniel shouted her name.

Elena did not flinch.

The hallway light touched the blood near her hairline.

Her voice remained clear.

“Yes, she did.”
