Chapter 9

Daniel’s confidence had always depended on Elena being alone.

Alone at the table.

Alone after arguments.

Alone when Gloria said no one would believe her.

Alone when documents appeared and Daniel insisted every good wife signed what protected the family.

Now he was surrounded by people who did not need his permission to look.

That was the part he could not bear.

“What stolen funds?” he demanded.

Agent Reed did not answer fully.

He opened the evidence folder just enough to confirm its existence, not its contents.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means enough for tonight.”

Gloria stared at Daniel.

For the first time, Elena saw suspicion pass between them.

Not loyalty.

Suspicion.

Did you expose me?

Did you use my name?

Did you move money I did not know about?

Their alliance cracked not because of conscience, but because consequence had entered the room.

Daniel looked at Elena.

“You did this to us.”

She stood in the hallway, blood-marked but upright.

“No. I stopped signing for it.”

He looked at the agents.

At the papers.

At the pen.

At the broken plate.

At his mother’s terrified face.

Finally, the shape of the problem reached him.

The apartment was not the only target.

The forged transfer was not isolated.

The money trail went somewhere.

And Elena had brought witnesses before he could bury the path.

Agent Reed’s voice cut through the room again.

“We’re investigating assault, forged deeds, and stolen funds.”

This time, Daniel heard all three.

Not as accusations.

As connected pieces.
