Chapter 7

The hallway outside the apartment felt colder.
Quieter.
Elena slipped on the dark blazer she had left near the entry chair, covering the torn edge of fear without hiding the blood near her hairline.
She held her phone and handbag with steady hands.
Inside the apartment, Daniel struggled once against the agents, then stopped when he realized force would not help him.
Gloria followed to the threshold, trembling.
“Elena,” she said, voice suddenly soft. “This has gone too far.”
Elena turned.
“No. It finally reached the right people.”
Gloria’s lips parted.
For months, she had spoken to Elena as if kindness were something she could grant or withdraw.
Now she wanted mercy from the woman she had helped corner at a dining table.
Agent Reed stepped into the hall beside Elena.
“We need medical documentation of the injury.”
Elena nodded.
Daniel called from inside, “She’s fine.”
Reed turned his head slowly.
No one else moved.
“She will be examined by professionals,” he said.
Daniel’s face darkened, but he said nothing.
That silence told Elena something.
He had always controlled the aftermath.
The apology.
The explanation.
The family version.
The next morning’s mood.
This time, the aftermath belonged to a record outside him.
The security footage.
The warrant.
The agents’ photographs.
The broken plate.
The documents.
The forged transfer.
The stolen funds Reed had mentioned but not yet explained.
Elena looked toward the city skyline at the end of the hall window.
Chicago glittered like nothing inside the apartment mattered.
But it did.
