Chapter 5

Agent Reed did not rush into the apartment dramatically.
He entered like a man who already knew what he would find.
That frightened Daniel more than shouting would have.
Reed’s eyes moved once across the room.
Blood trail.
Broken plate.
Transfer documents.
Black pen.
Gloria near the wall.
Daniel too close to Elena.
Security camera above the bookshelf.
No wasted motion.
“Step away from her and do not touch those documents.”
Daniel’s first instinct was still control.
“You can’t come into my home.”
Reed looked at him.
“This is not your home for purposes of this investigation.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Elena heard the word investigation land inside him.
Until then, he had believed this was a domestic argument.
Something he could explain.
Something Gloria could soften.
Something Elena could be accused of provoking.
But federal agents did not arrive because a wife and husband had a bad dinner.
They arrived because paper had crossed lines violence could not erase.
Daniel reached toward the transfer documents.
Maybe to grab them.
Maybe to tear them.
Maybe simply because he could not stand seeing them outside his control.
The agents moved immediately.
They secured his arms without striking him.
Gloria gasped.
“Don’t hurt him!”
Reed did not look at her.
“Then tell him to stop reaching for evidence.”
Evidence.
The word changed the room.
The broken plate became evidence.
The documents became evidence.
The pen became evidence.
The blood became evidence.
The recording became evidence.
Elena, standing with one hand near her wound, realized she was no longer trying to convince anyone the danger was real.

The room had begun speaking for her.
