Chapter 1 - The Coffee Across the White Kitchen

Husband Throws Scalding Coffee At His Wife For Refusing His Sister’s Bank Card Until Her Secret Recording Turns His Threat Into Evidence.
The coffee hit Claire’s face before the cup finished leaving Arthur’s hand.
Hot brown liquid splashed across her cheek, neck, and white silk blouse, scattering over the breakfast table, the polished floor, the waffles, the berries, the orange juice, and the vase of white flowers in the middle of the luxury kitchen.
For half a second, everything moved too slowly.
The ceramic cup spinning from Arthur’s fingers.
Brooke’s orange juice glass pausing halfway to her lips.
Claire’s eyes squeezing shut as pain burned across her skin.
Then the sound returned.
The cup struck the table and rolled against a plate.
Arthur stood beside the breakfast table in his navy suit, face twisted with fury, open-collar shirt bright under the morning light.
“Do what I say or get out.”
Claire pressed one hand to her burning cheek.
She did not scream.
That was what unsettled him first.
She turned slowly, coffee dripping from her hair, her blouse ruined, her skin reddening where the liquid had struck.
Brooke remained seated, cream blouse untouched, gold jewelry catching the daylight. She looked almost bored as she lifted her orange juice and extended her other hand across the table.
“Give me the bank card.”
Claire looked directly at her.
The word came out steady.
“No.”
Arthur slammed the empty cup down so hard the silverware rattled.
He leaned over her, invading her space, jaw grinding, nostrils flaring.
“You think anyone will believe you?”
Claire’s eyes moved past his shoulder.
Not to the door.
Not to Brooke.
To the small security camera mounted high in the kitchen corner.
Then she reached into her pocket and removed her phone.
The screen glowed, but no words were readable.
Brooke’s smug expression disappeared.
Claire looked at Arthur.
“The camera already does.”
Arthur straightened.
For the first time that morning, he looked uncertain.
Claire removed her wedding ring with deliberate calm and placed it beside the overturned coffee cup.
Then she picked up her handbag and stood.
Arthur stepped after her.
Claire glanced back once.
He stopped.

The tiny red light in the kitchen corner kept blinking.
