Chapter 7 - The Exit Through the Kitchen

Claire’s hand closed around the strap of her handbag.

The kitchen exit was only a few steps away.

Arthur stood aside, but his body remained tense, ready to reclaim space if fear overcame caution.

Brooke hovered near the breakfast table, one hand gripping the back of a chair, the other near the orange juice glass as if she needed something solid.

The waffles cooled.

Berries rolled in a small trail where the table had shaken.

Coffee dripped from the edge of the table to the floor.

The white flowers stood perfectly upright in the vase, absurdly graceful in the middle of ruin.

Claire took one step.

Then another.

Arthur’s voice came from behind her.

“You are making the biggest mistake of your life.”

She stopped without turning.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“You made it. I am documenting it.”

Arthur’s face tightened.

Brooke whispered, “Claire, please.”

That word had finally arrived too.

Please.

Not before the demand.

Not before Arthur threw the coffee.

Only after the camera, the phone, and the ring made consequences visible.

Claire turned halfway.

Her face was controlled, but pain shone through her eyes.

“Brooke, you watched him do it.”

Brooke shook her head.

“I didn’t know he would—”

“But you still asked for the card.”

Brooke’s mouth closed.

Arthur snapped, “Don’t blame her.”

Claire looked at him.

“Why? You do.”

That silenced him.

Because it was true in ways none of them wanted to unpack in the kitchen.

Arthur had made Claire responsible for Brooke’s debts.

Brooke responsible for his anger.

Family responsible for theft.

Marriage responsible for silence.

Everyone responsible except himself.

Claire’s phone vibrated once inside her handbag.

Arthur’s eyes darted toward the sound.

“Who is that?”

Claire did not answer.

She adjusted the bag on her shoulder.

The camera continued blinking.

Arthur’s fear returned sharper.

“Claire.”

This time her name sounded less like command and more like warning.

She looked at him one last time.

“You should clean up before someone else sees the cup.”

His eyes widened.

Someone else.

The phrase landed like a vehicle stopping outside a house.

Brooke looked toward the front of the home.

Arthur followed her gaze.

Claire opened the kitchen door.
