Chapter 5 - Arthur Tries to Recover

Arthur had always been good at changing tone.
Too good.
One moment rage.
The next, charm.
A threat turned into concern before anyone outside the marriage could question it.
Now he tried again.
He stepped back from the table, opened his hands, and let his face soften.
“Claire,” he said quietly, “you’re hurt. You’re upset. Let’s not make decisions while you’re emotional.”
Brooke watched him with hope.
There was the Arthur she trusted.
The one who could make ugly things sound complicated.
Claire wiped coffee from her wrist with the napkin.
“I made the decision before you threw the cup.”
His expression flickered.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I removed my ring.”
“That is theater.”
Claire looked at the ring beside the coffee.
“No. That is inventory.”
Brooke whispered, “What does that mean?”
Claire did not answer her.
Arthur’s eyes sharpened.
He understood that word.
Inventory meant items accounted for.
Ring.
Cup.
Phone.
Camera.
Witness.
Threat.
Demand.
The scene was no longer a fight.
It was a record.
Arthur’s voice lowered.
“If you walk out that door, do not come back.”
Claire stood slowly.
Pain crossed her face, but she did not let it bend her posture.
“I heard you the first time.”
Brooke stood too, panic returning.
“Arthur, stop threatening her while everything is recording.”
Arthur spun toward her.
The betrayal in his face was immediate.
Brooke clapped one hand over her mouth.
Too late.
Claire’s eyes moved to the camera.
Then to Brooke.
“Everything?”
Brooke’s face drained.
Arthur looked as if he wanted to snatch the word from the air.
Claire picked up her phone.
The screen remained unreadable.
She slipped it into her handbag.
Arthur reached toward the bag, then stopped.
He had learned the camera’s presence a few seconds too late.
Claire saw the aborted movement.
So did Brooke.
So did the tiny red light above them.
Arthur straightened, forcing control back into his voice.
“I said do not come back.”
Claire looked at him.
“You still think the door is the punishment.”

Then she turned toward the kitchen exit.
