Chapter 6 - The Ring Beside the Cup

The wedding ring looked small beside the overturned cup.

Too small for everything it carried.

Years of smiling through family dinners.

Years of Arthur deciding which emergencies mattered.

Years of Brooke needing something.

Years of Claire being told that refusing made her cold.

Now the ring sat in a circle of spilled coffee.

Arthur stared at it.

He had not expected her to remove it.

Not really.

He expected tears.

Maybe shouting.

Maybe a threat to leave that he could turn back with a few hard words and one softened apology.

He did not expect calm inventory.

He did not expect her to place the symbol down where the camera could see it.

Brooke stared too.

Her earlier smugness was gone.

“Arthur,” she whispered, “do something.”

Claire paused at that.

She turned back.

“He did.”

Brooke’s eyes lifted.

Claire continued.

“He threw coffee. He threatened me. He demanded access. He asked who would believe me.”

Arthur’s face darkened.

“You’re twisting this.”

Claire looked toward the camera.

“No. I am summarizing.”

Brooke’s lips trembled.

The summary sounded too clean.

That made it dangerous.

Arthur stepped around the table, not lunging now, but trying to block the kitchen exit with his body.

Claire stopped before reaching him.

The morning light illuminated the coffee stains on her blouse and the red marks on her neck.

Arthur’s eyes flicked to them.

A brief flash of fear crossed his face.

Not guilt.

Fear of visible damage.

Claire understood.

“You are looking at the mark, not me.”

He swallowed.

“That is not fair.”

The phrase almost made her laugh.

Fair.

The word finally arrived after the coffee.

After the threat.

After Brooke’s hand stretched for the card.

Claire’s voice lowered.

“You lost fair when you raised the cup.”

Arthur looked at the door behind him.

Then at the camera.

He stepped aside.

Not because he wanted to.

Because being filmed blocking her path would look worse.

Claire moved forward.

Brooke suddenly cried, “Wait.”

Claire stopped.

Brooke’s voice shook.

“I need that card.”

The truth came naked at last.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Claire looked at Brooke.

“No.”

Then she walked past Arthur.
