Chapter 8 - The Recording No One Sees

Claire did not show the phone again.

Arthur wanted it more because of that.

A visible recording could be challenged.

A hidden one became imagination.

How long had it been running?

Did it capture the threat?

The demand?

The coffee?

Brooke asking for the card?

Arthur asking who would believe her?

He did not know.

Claire let him not know.

That was the only power she needed in the moment.

She stood in the kitchen doorway with the handbag against her hip and the coffee stain spread across her white blouse.

Morning light framed her from behind.

For the first time in years, Arthur seemed unsure whether he was allowed to follow.

Brooke looked at him.

“Arthur, fix this.”

He turned on her.

“Stop saying that.”

Brooke recoiled.

Claire watched the fracture appear.

Entitlement only looks united while someone else pays.

The moment payment stops, blame starts looking for a new host.

Arthur dragged one hand through his hair.

“Claire, come back to the table.”

“No.”

“We can talk.”

“You had breakfast to talk.”

He looked toward the camera again.

“Turn it off.”

Claire’s expression almost softened.

“You asked who would believe me.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes, and you made your point.”

“No,” she said. “The camera made it.”

Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.

“This will ruin us.”

Claire turned toward her.

“Us?”

Brooke swallowed.

The word had slipped out naturally.

Not me.

Not Arthur.

Us.

Claire understood then that Brooke was not merely visiting with a desperate request. She was invested in Arthur’s control because she benefited from it.

Maybe not legally.

Maybe not in a way the story would reveal.

But emotionally, financially, practically—Brooke had been part of the pressure.

Claire’s voice became very cold.

“You both sat at this table expecting me to hand over access after being threatened.”

Brooke shook her head.

“No, I—”

Claire lifted one hand.

“Do not improve the story now.”

Arthur stepped forward.

Claire’s eyes moved to the camera.

He stopped.

That was the rhythm now.

Movement.

Camera.

Stop.

The house had a witness he could not charm.
