Chapter 2 - Brooke’s Empty Hand

Brooke’s hand remained stretched over the table.
Open.
Waiting.
Entitled.
Claire stared at it as coffee cooled against her blouse and pain pulsed across her cheek.
That hand had asked for too many things.
A loan.
A transfer.
A “temporary” card.
A quiet favor Arthur insisted was family business.
This morning, it asked again, as if Claire’s refusal were rudeness instead of survival.
Brooke’s fingers curled slowly when Claire did not move.
“You’re being dramatic,” she said.
Claire almost laughed.
The coffee stain spread down the silk like evidence refusing to stay small.
Arthur looked from Claire’s phone to the camera in the corner. His anger had not vanished, but something had cracked beneath it.
Calculation entered.
He lowered his voice.
“Claire, put the phone away.”
She did not.
Brooke turned toward him sharply.
“Arthur, handle this.”
The sentence told Claire everything.
Brooke had not come for breakfast.
She had come for access.
The waffles, berries, flowers, cups, and bright Greenwich morning were just stage dressing for another demand dressed up as family.
Arthur’s eyes sharpened.
“You heard me,” he said. “Put it away.”
Claire looked at the overturned ceramic cup.
“You threw coffee at me.”
His jaw tightened.
“You refused to help.”
“I refused to give your sister my bank card.”
Brooke recoiled as if the plain sentence were vulgar.
Arthur stepped closer.
“You know how this works.”
Claire’s eyes lifted.
“No. I know how it ends.”
The kitchen went still.
Brooke’s face tightened.
Arthur’s gaze flicked again toward the camera.
He had seen it every day and never cared. It was part of the home system, another expensive feature in a house he liked to control.
Now it stared back at him.
Claire placed the phone gently on the table, screen down, near the coffee stain.
She did not need to show anything.
The threat was not the screen.
The threat was that something had already started.
Brooke finally lowered her hand.
Her orange juice trembled inside the glass.
Arthur noticed and grew angrier because Brooke’s fear made his own visible.
“This is my house,” he snapped.
Claire’s expression did not change.
She looked at the ring beside the cup.
Then back at him.
“Then why are you both afraid of the kitchen watching?”

No one answered.
