Chapter 14 - EVELYN’S SECOND STORY
Evelyn admitted she watched Richard use Mark’s old tablet.
Mark had left the device at his parents’ house during treatment.
Richard knew the passcode.
“He said Mark told him to submit paperwork.”
“Did you hear Mark say that?”
“No.”
“Why believe him?”
“He was my husband.”
I almost laughed.
“So was Mark.”
She flinched.
Good.
“What did Richard submit?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he use Mark’s signature?”
“The tablet had it saved.”
Digital convenience becoming fraud.
“When did you realize something was wrong?”
“When Mark called.”
“What did he say?”
“Why did you authorize Dad?”
My body went still.
“You spoke to Mark about it.”
“Yes.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That Richard said he had permission.”
“And Mark?”
“He said, ‘Mom, you know that’s not permission.’”
Silence.
“Why didn’t you stop Richard?”
Evelyn cried.
“I was afraid he’d lose the company.”
