Chapter 25 - THE RUSTED CHEVROLET

Noah wanted Mark’s old Chevrolet.
Absolutely not.
It had unreliable brakes, rust along the frame, and an interior that smelled like wet pennies.
He was seventeen by then.
“I’ll restore it.”
“With what money?”
“My job.”
“You make twelve dollars an hour.”
“Exactly.”
I let him try.
A mechanic inspected it.
Frame repair possible.
Expensive.
Noah spent two summers working.
Frank helped.
I paid for safety-critical parts but made Noah contribute.
The first time the headlights worked properly again, he stood in the driveway.
Then flashed them.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Frank opened his garage across the street and shouted:
“Very funny.”

For the first time, we laughed at the signal.
It no longer belonged only to the day we were thrown out.
