Chapter 21 - EVELYN CHOOSES
Evelyn eventually gave investigators the last set of documents.
Original family-business binders stored in a lake-house cabinet.
Richard told her to burn them.
She did not.
Why?
“I couldn’t.”
Not heroism.
Enough.
The binders showed Richard knew the $410,000 was a gift.
His handwritten notation from fourteen years earlier:
Dad’s residence gift to Mark.
Later someone crossed out gift.
Wrote:
Advance.
Ink analysis suggested years later.
Evelyn admitted Richard made the change.
She also admitted knowing the funeral lockout was planned.
“When?”
“Two days before.”
“You could have warned me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
She cried.
“I thought Richard would scare you, then Dana would negotiate.”
“You watched him punch Noah.”
“I know.”
“Do you understand Noah may never see you again?”

That was the first time she accepted consequence without bargaining.
