Chapter 1 - THE HAND ABOVE EMILY

Richard Hale heard Emily’s sobbing before he crossed the threshold.
He had returned to Chicago hours earlier than planned, still wearing the dark suit from his flight. The house looked almost peaceful from outside. Warm lamps glowed behind the curtains, and the classic brick facade appeared untouched by the storm gathering over the city.
Inside the living room, peace ended.
Emily sat curled on the patterned rug, clutching her infant brother against her chest. Milk soaked the front of her pink dress. A glass bottle lay on its side beside a widening white stain.
Near her knees rested a coil of rope.
Veronica stood above her in a red dress, one hand raised.
“Don’t hurt us!” Emily cried.
“Useless child!” Veronica shouted.
She pointed toward the bottle.
“I told you not to drop it!”
Emily bent over the baby, protecting his head with her shoulder.
“I’m sorry… please don’t hurt him.”
Richard stepped through the doorway.
“What’s going on here?”
Veronica froze with her hand still raised.
Emily looked up.
For one second, disbelief replaced terror. Then she tightened her arms around the baby as though even Richard might try to take him.
Richard’s gaze moved from the milk to the rope, then to the bruises visible beneath Emily’s short sleeves.
Veronica lowered her hand and forced her face into an expression of shock.
“Richard, thank God. Emily lost control again. She nearly dropped Noah.”
Richard did not move toward his wife.
He moved toward his daughter.
Emily recoiled.
That reaction struck him harder than anything Veronica could have said.
He crouched several feet away.
“Emily, it’s Dad.”
Her lips trembled.
“You came back.”
“I did.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Noah whimpered beneath the blanket. Emily adjusted him with practiced care far beyond what any seven-year-old should have needed to learn.
Richard looked at Veronica.
“How long has she been holding him?”
“Only a few minutes.”
Emily shook her head.
“Since lunch.”
It was after seven in the evening.
Veronica’s jaw tightened.
“She has started lying whenever she is corrected.”
Richard pointed toward the rope.
“What is that for?”
Veronica glanced down as if noticing it for the first time.
“It fell from the curtain box.”
The living room curtains used metal hooks.
Richard knew because he had installed them himself.
He slowly extended both hands toward Emily.
“You can give Noah to me.”
She did not.
“Please don’t be mad,” she whispered.
“I’m not mad at you.”
“She says you will be.”
“Who says that?”
Emily looked at Veronica.
Richard’s expression hardened.
He called emergency services, then used his phone to activate the house security archive.
Veronica stepped toward him.
“The cameras were disconnected during the renovation.”
“The image cameras were.”
Her confidence faltered.
Richard had installed a separate audio channel after a burglary attempt the previous year. It uploaded to an encrypted office server whenever voices rose above a certain level.
His phone displayed the first available file.
Veronica stared at the screen.
Emily buried her face against Noah’s blanket.
Before Richard pressed play, the baby monitor on the side table emitted a quiet electronic chime.
A recording had been stored locally.
Its timestamp was from three hours earlier.

And beneath the sound of Noah crying, Veronica’s voice could already be heard telling Emily exactly what would happen if Richard came home.
👉 The first recording would reveal whether Emily had dropped the bottle—or whether Veronica had built the entire scene for Richard to find.
