Chapter 5 - THE BABY SHE USED AS A WEAPON
Noah’s pediatric examination revealed no serious injuries.
He had been neglected.
His feeding schedule was inconsistent, his diapers were sometimes unchanged for hours, and he had lost weight during the previous month.
Veronica had told Richard the baby was thriving.
She sent carefully timed photographs after feeding him.
Between those photographs, Emily did most of the work.
Dr. Ward asked Emily what happened when Noah cried at night.
“Veronica puts him in my room.”
“What does she do?”
“Locks her door.”
“What if you need help?”
“I knock.”
“Does she answer?”
“Sometimes she says bad sisters know how to stop babies.”
Emily had learned to prepare bottles, change diapers, and rock Noah while standing because sitting made him cry harder.
She was seven.
Richard asked why Veronica would neglect her own son.
Grace gave the simplest answer.
“She did not need Noah harmed. She needed Emily exhausted and frightened around him.”
A tired child made mistakes.
A crying baby created urgency.
A dropped bottle became evidence.
If Noah suffered even a minor injury, Veronica could blame Emily and request immediate removal.
The baby was not merely another victim.
He was the trigger in Caleb’s legal plan.
Mara recovered a deleted recording from Veronica’s phone.
Caleb said:
“The infant gives the court a reason to act before Richard’s lawyers can respond.”
Veronica asked:
“What if Emily never loses control?”
“Then increase the pressure.”
“What kind?”
“Sleep deprivation. Forced caregiving. A public confrontation. Do not injure Noah. We need fear, not a dead child.”
Veronica replied:
“And if Richard comes home early?”
“Make him angry.”
Every person in the living room had been assigned a role.
Emily would become dangerous.
Richard would become violent.
Veronica would become afraid.
Noah would become the innocent child she claimed to protect.
The only thing they had not planned was Richard seeing Emily before Veronica could control the story.
Emily held the baby against her because she believed no other adult would protect him.
That image destroyed the accusation that she wanted him hurt.
Richard brought Emily her clean clothes and one of Catherine’s old storybooks.
The book had been missing for months.
Police found it inside Veronica’s locked closet with several unopened gifts Richard had mailed home.
Emily touched the cover.
“She said you threw Mom’s things away.”
“I didn’t.”
“She said you wanted a new family.”
Richard sat beside her.
“I married Veronica because I thought she wanted to join our family.”
“She wanted to replace it.”
“Yes.”
The answer came without defense.
Emily asked whether he would marry someone else.
“Not now.”
“Later?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will they get to tell you what I say?”
“No.”
“How?”
Richard gave her a concrete plan.
She would have a private phone monitored only for safety by an independent child advocate. Video calls would occur without another adult controlling the room. School counselors and doctors would contact both Richard and Grace directly.
No one person would become the gate between Emily and the world again.
Emily nodded slowly.
Then Mara called.
Caleb had used a remote legal system to file the emergency petition despite disappearing.
A hearing was scheduled for eight the next morning.
The petition included a new allegation.
It claimed Richard had abducted both children from Veronica after threatening to kill her.
Attached was a cropped still image from the living room.
Richard stood over Veronica.
