Chapter 8 - THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Noah’s birth certificate disappeared from Richard’s home safe three weeks earlier.
Veronica claimed Richard had moved it.
He believed her.
The safe showed no damage because she knew the code.
Caleb carried the certificate, a notarized travel authorization bearing Richard’s forged signature, and a passport application listing Veronica as Noah’s sole custodial parent.
If they reached Canada before the court order activated, confusion at the border might have delayed Richard long enough for them to disappear.
The document named a rented apartment in Toronto.
Mara coordinated with Canadian authorities.
The apartment had been leased under Veronica’s maiden name six months earlier.
It contained infant supplies, cash, and a prepared nursery.
There was no room for Emily.
The family Veronica claimed to protect had always excluded her.
Richard asked why Caleb still carried the birth certificate after Veronica’s arrest.
Grace explained that the attorney needed leverage.
He could offer the document, the offshore accounts, or the remaining forged filings in exchange for reduced charges.
Or he could attempt to complete part of the scheme alone and recover money hidden inside Willow Brook.
Caleb had no emotional attachment to Noah.
The baby was an asset connected to Veronica’s escape plan.
Police recovered the birth certificate after finding Caleb’s abandoned bag behind the bank. He had removed only the cash and laptop.
Noah’s identity was secured.
Emily watched Richard place the document into a bank box rather than another home safe.
“Why not keep it with us?” she asked.
“Because important things should not depend on one lock or one person.”
“Even you?”
“Especially me.”
Emily seemed to appreciate that answer.
At the temporary family residence, Richard established a clear routine.
A nurse helped with Noah during the day.
Emily could offer assistance only when she wanted.
No one woke her for crying.
No one demanded bottles.
The first time Noah began screaming at midnight, Emily rushed into the hallway.
Richard was already holding him.
“You can go back to bed,” he said.
“What if you get tired?”
“I will get tired.”
“What happens then?”
“I ask the nurse for help. I do not make you become his parent.”
Emily stood there for a moment.
Then she returned to her room.
The next morning, she said she had slept through Noah’s second feeding.
Richard told her that was good.
She waited for sarcasm.
None came.
Veronica’s attorney requested a plea meeting.
She offered information about Caleb’s passwords and Willow Brook accounts if prosecutors reduced the most serious child-abuse charge.
Mara promised only that cooperation would be considered.
Veronica described a hidden online folder Caleb called the continuity file.
It contained automated petitions and media packages designed to activate if either conspirator was arrested.
One package showed Richard entering the living room.
The footage came from a camera hidden inside the classic mantel clock.
Police had overlooked it because it was not connected to the house network.
The full video captured everything from another angle.
Veronica pouring milk.
Emily shielding Noah.
Richard entering.
Veronica raising her hand.
There was no ambiguity.
The same hidden camera intended to frame Richard instead recorded the truth Caleb tried to crop away.
The continuity file also contained a final instruction.
If both Veronica and Caleb lost access to the children, a sealed allegation would be sent directly to Emily’s school.
It claimed Richard had coached her testimony.
