Chapter 10 - THE CAMERA ACROSS THE STREET
Police found the camera inside a parked delivery van across from the temporary residence.
No one occupied it.
The system transmitted through a cellular connection to Caleb’s laptop, but the remote account had been wiped.
He had watched the house.
He had not entered it.
Mara increased protection around Emily and Noah.
Richard wanted to move again.
Emily refused.
“If we keep leaving, he decides where we live.”
Grace supported her, provided the security plan improved.
Visible officers replaced hidden surveillance. Emily knew where emergency buttons were. She helped choose which adults could enter.
Control returned through participation, not secrecy.
Caleb’s laptop contained the complete legal scheme.
He had prepared arguments for every possible event.
If Richard became angry, call him violent.
If Richard admitted failure, call him unfit.
If Emily cried, call her unstable.
If Emily remained calm, call her coached.
If Veronica lost custody, claim the baby needed maternal contact.
If Caleb was exposed, activate old signed pages and scheduled filings.
The plan looked sophisticated.
At its core, it relied on one assumption: adults would trust official-looking documents more than a frightened child.
Emily’s direct statement had been supported by recordings, medical evidence, and physical marks.
That broke the machinery.
The laptop also revealed Caleb’s location history.
His last live connection came from Willow Brook itself.
Police entered the facility and found him inside an unused office behind the records room.
He did not resist arrest.
He had shaved his beard and changed clothes, but the laptop access logs placed him there.
Mara asked why he returned.
“To preserve client confidentiality.”
“You were destroying records.”
“I was removing illegally obtained material.”
“You created false court orders.”
“I used aggressive legal strategies.”
“You helped imprison children for profit.”
Caleb’s face remained calm.
“Every placement had judicial approval.”
“Based on evidence you helped manufacture.”
His composure resembled Veronica’s before the recordings surfaced.
Calmness had been their costume of innocence.
Police seized boxes of files documenting other placements. The investigation expanded only around Caleb’s repeated method.
He remained the sole legal architect.
Veronica had been his most active household partner.
Caleb was charged with conspiracy, fraud, evidence fabrication, obstruction, child endangerment, and unlawful access to court systems.
His arrest removed the immediate outside threat.
Yet one problem remained.
A genuine document inside his files carried Richard’s signature. It authorized Veronica to make emergency medical decisions for Emily.
Richard remembered signing it after Catherine’s death when traveling for work.
The authority had never been revoked.
Veronica used it to cancel counseling appointments, block medical disclosures, and prevent doctors from speaking to Richard directly.
The signature was real.
The danger had begun before Caleb’s forgeries.
Richard had voluntarily placed too much control into one person’s hands.
“I thought emergency authority made the family safer,” he told Emily.
“It made her the only one people listened to,” she replied.
“Yes.”
He revoked the document and replaced it with a shared system requiring verification from Richard, Grace, and an independent child advocate.
No single adult could isolate Emily again.
Then Dr. Ward called.
Noah’s latest blood test showed traces of a sedative.
The amount was low and not life-threatening.
But it had not been prescribed at the hospital or temporary home.
