Chapter 11 - THE SLEEPING DROPS
The sedative explained Noah’s irregular behavior.
Some evenings, he slept through hunger.
Other nights, he woke screaming as the medication wore off.
Veronica blamed Emily for upsetting him.
She gave the infant “sleeping drops” whenever she needed long periods to prepare recordings, meet Caleb, or leave the house.
A bottle was found behind cleaning products beneath the kitchen sink.
Its label had been removed.
Veronica’s fingerprints covered the cap.
Emily remembered seeing the liquid.
“She said babies need medicine when sisters make them nervous.”
Richard felt another surge of anger.
This time, he remained seated.
“What did she make you do?”
“Hold him after the drops. Then she took pictures because he looked strange.”
Caleb had included those photographs in the petition.
Noah appeared limp in Emily’s arms.
The caption claimed the girl held him too tightly.
In reality, the baby was drugged.
Dr. Ward believed the low repeated doses were unlikely to cause permanent injury, but Noah required monitoring.
Veronica had risked her own son’s health to create evidence against Emily.
The prosecution added child endangerment involving an infant.
Her attorney urged a plea.
Vanessa—no, Veronica—finally agreed to provide a complete statement.
She admitted forcing Emily to care for Noah, using rope, staging the milk incident, intercepting calls, and working with Caleb.
She still minimized the sedative.
“I needed him to sleep.”
“You needed him unresponsive in photographs,” Mara said.
“I didn’t know the amount was dangerous.”
“You gave medicine without a prescription.”
“He cried constantly.”
“He was an infant.”
Veronica looked away.
She claimed Caleb persuaded her that Emily would eventually destroy the marriage.
“He said Richard would always choose Catherine’s daughter.”
Mara answered:
“Richard was supposed to choose his child.”
Veronica’s breakdown did not erase planning.
But it exposed how resentment and greed reinforced each other.
She wanted Emily’s trust.
She also wanted a family in which the older child no longer reminded Richard of Catherine.
Caleb turned that desire into legal strategy.
Veronica turned it into daily cruelty.
Emily was told an age-appropriate version.
She asked whether Noah would be okay.
Doctors believed he would.
“Was it my fault when he slept too much?” she asked.
“No,” Richard said.
“I thought I held him wrong.”
“You were trying to protect him while an adult gave him medicine.”
Emily pressed her lips together.
“She made everything feel like my fault.”
“That was how she controlled you.”
“What if I still feel it?”
“Then we keep telling the truth until the feeling catches up.”
The criminal cases moved toward trial.
Caleb refused a plea unless prosecutors dropped the charges connected to other children.
They refused.
Veronica accepted a conditional plea involving a long prison sentence, restitution, and permanent loss of financial authority over minors.
Future contact with Noah would require court review years later.
No contact with Emily would be permitted.
Richard did not celebrate.
A conviction could stop Veronica from reaching the children.
It could not make Emily seven again without the memories.
At the temporary home, Emily chose to feed Noah for the first time since the living-room incident.
Richard sat nearby.
“You can stop whenever you want,” he said.
Noah drank calmly.
Emily’s hands began shaking halfway through.
She handed him back.
Richard took him without disappointment.
“You stopped before you were overwhelmed,” he said.
“Is that good?”
“Yes.”
Veronica had taught her that endurance proved worth.
Richard wanted her to learn that asking for help proved awareness.
That evening, Grace received a sealed package from Caleb’s office.
Inside was Catherine’s original trust memorandum.
A handwritten note from Catherine warned that Caleb had requested too much control during the drafting process.
She had planned to replace him as family attorney.
