Chapter 2 - THE ROPE ON THE RUG
The paramedics arrived before Richard played the recording.
A female officer named Mara Quinn entered with them and immediately separated the adults. Veronica protested that the situation had already been resolved.
Mara looked at Emily’s milk-soaked dress, the rope, and the infant in her arms.
“It does not look resolved.”
Emily refused to release Noah until Richard promised to remain in sight. Even then, she handed the baby to the paramedic only after checking that the woman’s hands were empty.
That frightened Richard.
Children did not inspect adults for weapons unless experience had taught them to.
At the hospital, doctors examined both children.
Noah was mildly dehydrated but otherwise stable. Emily had bruises on her wrists, upper arms, knees, and back. Some were fresh. Others had begun fading days earlier.
Dr. Helen Ward photographed the marks and asked how they happened.
Emily stared at the floor.
“I fall.”
“How often?”
“A lot.”
“Does someone make you fall?”
Emily glanced toward the door.
Veronica waited elsewhere under police supervision.
The child finally nodded.
“The rope makes my legs go numb.”
Richard felt the room tilt.
“What rope?”
“The one in the living room.”
Dr. Ward asked whether Veronica tied her.
Emily whispered, “Only when Noah won’t stop crying.”
Richard turned away.
He pressed one hand against the wall and tried to steady his breathing.
Veronica had told him Emily became jealous after Noah’s birth. She said the child refused to help and frequently threw tantrums when attention shifted toward the baby.
Richard had believed enough of it to ask Emily to be more patient.
He had unknowingly repeated Veronica’s accusations to the child she was abusing.
Detective Mara arrived with the baby monitor.
The recording began at 4:03 p.m.
Noah was crying.
Emily’s voice said, “My arms hurt.”
Veronica answered, “Then hold him properly.”
“I need the bathroom.”
“You move when I tell you.”
A chair scraped across the wooden floor.
Emily began sobbing.
Veronica said, “If you drop him, your father will finally understand what you are.”
The recording continued.
A glass bottle struck the table.
Milk splashed.
Emily cried out that Veronica had poured it.
Then came the sound of rope tightening.
Richard stopped the file.
He could not breathe normally.
Mara continued listening through headphones.
At 6:48, Veronica ordered Emily to sit on the rug holding Noah while she prepared the room.
“What did she prepare?” Richard asked.
Mara played the next section aloud.
Veronica moved the bottle beside Emily, placed the rope in view, and said:
“When Richard comes in, you will tell him you lost your temper. If you speak against me, I will tell the judge you tried to hurt the baby.”
Emily replied:
“What judge?”
“The one who decides whether bad children stay with their families.”
Richard closed his eyes.
The scene had not been an impulsive punishment.
Veronica had staged it for him.
Mara asked why Richard returned early.
He explained that his finance director had discovered a transfer request from Emily’s inheritance account. The request sought two hundred thousand dollars for a residential treatment assessment.
Richard had never approved it.
When he called Veronica, she said the bank had made a clerical error.
He changed his flight anyway.
Mara looked toward Emily’s room.
“Your daughter was supposed to be removed from the house tomorrow morning.”
She showed Richard a court petition recovered from Veronica’s handbag.
It described Emily as violent, manipulative, and dangerously obsessed with Noah.
Attached was a photograph of Emily holding the baby while rope circled her ankles.
