Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BENEATH THE BOARDS

Lila Harper knelt beside the dark stain in the living-room floor, both palms pressed against the wood.
Her small shoulders shook beneath a yellow sweater several sizes too large. Toys lay scattered around her—plastic animals, crayons, a stuffed rabbit missing one button eye—but the four-year-old stared only at the roughly scrubbed floorboards.
Officer Dana Reeve crouched beside her.
The welfare call had come from a neighbor who heard a child crying inside the house after midnight. The front door had been unlocked. No adult had answered. Lila was sitting alone in the dim living room, whispering toward the floor.
Dana kept her voice gentle.
“Lila, where is your mother?”
The child pointed violently downward.
“Daddy isn’t dead—he’s under the floor.”
Every officer in the room froze.
Officer Kowalski lowered the flashlight he had been using to examine the walls.
Dana followed Lila’s finger.
Several boards near the couch were darker than the surrounding wood. Someone had scrubbed them hard enough to remove part of the finish. Thin scratches ran along their edges, as though they had recently been lifted and forced back into place.
“What do you mean, sweetheart?” Dana asked.
Lila pressed her ear against the floor.
“Sometimes he talks to me from down there.”
Dana rose sharply.
“Nobody steps closer.”
Kowalski reached for his radio.
“Request forensics and emergency medical. Possible confined person beneath the residence.”
Dana guided Lila away from the stain, but the child fought her.
“No! He’ll think I left!”
“I’m not taking you out of the room.”
“He gets scared when it’s quiet.”
Dana stopped pulling.
“What does your daddy say?”
Lila wiped her nose with her sleeve.
“He says, ‘Stay awake, little bird.’”
Dana looked at Kowalski.
Daniel Harper had been reported missing five months earlier. His wife, Rachel, told investigators that he had fled after stealing money from the family construction company.
The case had gone cold.
Rachel had insisted Daniel abandoned both her and Lila.
Now Rachel was missing from the house, and her daughter was kneeling beside a floor that appeared to have been opened recently.
Forensics specialist Evan Marsh arrived with two technicians and a ground-penetrating radar unit. He slid the device slowly across the boards.
The screen changed.
Evan’s controlled expression tightened.
“There’s a hollow space beneath us.”
“How large?” Dana asked.
“Approximately eight feet long. Four feet deep.”
Kowalski stared at the display.
“There’s something directly beneath us.”
The shape was too large to be plumbing.
It shifted.
Only once.
Lila screamed and lunged toward the floor.
“Daddy!”
Dana caught her around the waist while Evan’s technicians placed crowbars beneath the first board.
The nails resisted.
A second officer helped.
Wood groaned through the silent house.
The board rose several inches, releasing a smell of damp earth, blood, and stale air.
Dana aimed her flashlight into the opening.
A human hand lay against the dirt below.
The fingers moved weakly.
Lila reached toward it.
“I told you,” she sobbed. “He isn’t dead.”
Something scraped in the darkness.
Then a man’s broken voice rose from beneath the house.

“Don’t let Rachel come back.”
👉 Daniel Harper was alive beneath the floor, but his first words accused the wife who had spent five months claiming he abandoned their child.
