Chapter 15 - THE KNOCKS AT THE SAFE HOUSE

Daniel left the hospital using crutches.

He and Lila could not return to the Harper house. The floor remained open, the basement contaminated, and every room carried evidence of what had happened.

The court placed them temporarily in a protected rental outside Ashford.

The home had concrete floors beneath thick carpet.

Lila inspected every corner before choosing a bedroom.

“No wood,” she said.

“No wood,” Daniel agreed.

Dana showed her the locks, windows, and alarm system. She did not describe the address as perfectly safe.

She called it protected.

Daniel began physical therapy in the mornings and trauma counseling in the afternoons. Lila attended preschool for two hours each day with a support worker nearby.

They ate dinner together every night.

Ordinary routines required deliberate effort.

Daniel sometimes stopped breathing when someone walked above them in the apartment hallway.

Lila placed crackers beside the couch in case he became trapped again.

He never threw them away.

He thanked her, then moved them into the kitchen cupboard with the rest of the food.

“Food belongs where everyone can reach it,” he told her.

Mason remained in county jail awaiting trial.

Rachel entered a plea on the financial charges and continued negotiations concerning the kidnapping. Her statement helped prosecutors, but it did not erase the key in her hand or the child she abandoned.

The mysterious recipient marked R remained unidentified.

Investigators checked Rachel, relatives, company employees, attorneys, and title staff.

No matching connection appeared.

The scheduled guardianship petition had not been filed.

Dana began to suspect Mason created the recipient to frighten anyone examining the phone.

Then a sealed envelope arrived at the county courthouse.

Inside was the completed petition.

A witness named Rebecca Hale claimed she had cared for Lila during Daniel’s disappearance and believed he was mentally unstable.

No person by that name appeared in school, medical, or childcare records.

The petition contained private statements Lila made during her first night in protective care:

Daddy talked under the floor.

Daddy told me not to sleep.

Daddy made me bring food.

The sentences were true.

Their meaning had been reversed.

The petition described Daniel as a delusional father who manipulated his child from hiding and endangered her by encouraging secret behavior.

Someone had accessed confidential interview notes.

Dana traced the records request to a password used inside the child-services office. The account belonged to an employee on medical leave.

Its credentials had been written on a sticky note inside an unlocked desk.

No vast network was required.

Only one person willing to enter an office and photograph a screen.

Security footage showed a woman in a cleaning uniform entering after hours.

Her face remained hidden.

The same woman delivered the envelope at the courthouse.

Dana showed Daniel one still image.

He studied the posture.

“I know her.”

“Who?”

“Mason’s former bookkeeper. Rebecca Lane.”

Rebecca had left Harper-Cole Construction a year before Daniel disappeared. She testified during the early investigation that Daniel often argued with Mason over money.

Her statement helped establish the original embezzlement story.

Police found her apartment empty.

A photograph of Mason stood on the kitchen counter.

The relationship had been personal as well as financial.

Rebecca was the missing R.

Dana ordered immediate protection around Daniel and Lila.

That night, rain struck the safe-house windows.

Daniel sat beside Lila’s bed reading one of the stories stored inside the stuffed rabbit. The repaired button eye had been removed permanently. No device remained hidden inside.

Lila fell asleep with one hand around his thumb.

Three slow knocks sounded at the front door.

Daniel stopped reading.

Dana and Kowalski were stationed in an unmarked car across the street. Daniel called them before moving.

“Do not approach the door,” Dana said.

Another knock came.

Then a woman’s voice spoke from the porch.

“Daniel, I have the original statement Rachel signed before you disappeared.”

Dana’s car doors opened outside.

The porch camera showed a woman in a wet gray coat holding a folder against her chest.

Rebecca Lane.

She looked directly into the lens.

“Mason lied to me too,” she said. “I can prove Rachel planned everything before he ever threatened her.”

Lila woke.

The woman reached into her coat.

Daniel pulled his daughter behind him as police lights flooded the rain.

Rebecca’s hand emerged holding not a weapon, but a small brass key stained dark around its teeth.

Lila stared at it.

“That opens the other floor.”

Daniel’s face went still.

“There is no other floor.”

Lila pointed downward.

From beneath the carpet came three faint taps.
