Chapter 2 - THE MAN IN THE CAVITY

Firefighters removed six floorboards before they could reach Daniel.

He lay inside an old storm-storage cavity beneath the living room, one wrist chained to a support beam. His beard was overgrown, his lips cracked, and dried blood covered the side of his face.

A plastic water bottle rested near his shoulder.

Beside it were three crackers, a red crayon, and the torn ear of Lila’s stuffed rabbit.

“He’s breathing,” a paramedic said.

Daniel’s eyes opened when Dana descended into the cavity.

His gaze moved past her toward the hole above.

“Lila?”

“She’s safe.”

“Let me see her.”

“First we get you out.”

Daniel gripped Dana’s sleeve with surprising strength.

“Rachel and Mason—”

His voice failed.

Dana leaned closer.

“Rachel and Mason did this?”

Daniel’s eyes closed.

“They’ll come back for the papers.”

The chain had been secured with a steel padlock. Evan photographed it before firefighters cut through the link.

Daniel cried out when they lifted him.

His left leg bent at an unnatural angle, and deep restraint marks circled both wrists. One rib appeared to move incorrectly beneath his shirt.

Lila stood behind Kowalski, watching the rescue team carry her father upward.

“Daddy?”

Daniel turned his head toward her.

For one second, the pain disappeared from his expression.

“Little bird.”

Lila tore free from Kowalski and ran forward.

The paramedics stopped her from climbing onto the stretcher, but Daniel reached down and touched her hair.

“You heard me.”

“I brought you crackers.”

“I know.”

“You said to stay awake.”

“You kept me awake.”

Dana felt something tighten in her chest.

This child had been visiting the loose board without any adult knowing—or perhaps while an adult deliberately ignored it.

Daniel was transported to Ashford Regional Hospital under police protection.

Lila rode separately with Dana.

During the drive, she held the stuffed rabbit against her face.

“When did your daddy go under the floor?” Dana asked.

“After the loud night.”

“How many nights ago?”

Lila counted on her fingers, became confused, then held up three.

“Was your mommy there?”

Lila nodded.

“Was another person there?”

“Uncle Mason.”

Dana already knew the name.

Mason Cole was Rachel’s older brother and Daniel’s former business partner. He managed the accounts for Harper-Cole Construction before Daniel disappeared.

Rachel had told police Daniel stole company funds and ran.

Mason supported every part of her statement.

“Where is your mother now?” Dana asked.

“She put clothes in bags.”

“When?”

“Before the police lights.”

“Did she take you?”

“She said Uncle Mason would come back.”

“Did she say where she was going?”

Lila buried her face in the rabbit.

“She said Daddy was already dead.”

At the hospital, doctors stabilized Daniel and rushed him into surgery for internal bleeding and a fractured leg. Toxicology showed sedatives in his system, though the level was already falling.

Dana remained with Lila until Claire Benson from child protective services arrived.

Before Lila was taken to a protected pediatric room, she tugged Dana’s sleeve.

“Mommy gave Daddy water.”

Dana knelt.

“You saw her?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did she help him out?”

Lila shook her head.

“She said the floor had to stay closed.”

Back at the house, Evan entered the cavity after medical personnel left.

The space had once been accessible through a narrow basement hatch, but someone had sealed the hatch with new lumber. The only recent opening was through the living-room floor.

Inside, investigators found a bucket, food wrappers, rope, a syringe, and a battery-powered lantern.

This was not an impulsive hiding place.

Someone had prepared it.

Evan illuminated the support beam where Daniel had been chained.

Words had been scratched into the wood.

Not Daniel’s name.

A date.

Tomorrow’s date.

Beneath it were two words:

May you like

HOUSE CLOSING.

👉 Daniel had been imprisoned beneath the home only days before someone planned to sell it.
