Chapter 8 - THE BLOOD ON MASON’S CROWBAR
Hospital security doubled overnight.
Mason never appeared.
At 2:10 a.m., a stolen utility van entered the hospital parking structure and left four minutes later. The driver wore a cap and kept his face turned away.
Officers found nothing missing from the building.
Then Dana noticed the van had paused beside the emergency generator access.
Mason had been testing security.
Not attacking yet.
Inside the abandoned workshop, Evan reconstructed the payroll fraud.
Mason created nineteen false employees and deposited their wages into accounts he controlled. When Daniel began asking questions, Mason transferred a large sum into an account opened with Daniel’s stolen identity.
Rachel had helped provide the documents.
She claimed Mason told her the account was temporary and legal.
The evidence showed she signed two authorization forms.
Daniel’s disappearance allowed Mason to present the transfer as theft.
Employees believed their company failed because Daniel ran with the money.
Mason purchased their remaining equipment at auction through North Creek.
He had dismantled the business while framing his partner.
Kowalski found the stolen utility van near an industrial drainage canal. Inside were bolt cutters, rope, a handgun, and printed hospital floor plans.
Mason’s fingerprints covered the steering wheel.
A dark smear on the passenger seat contained his blood.
He may have injured himself abandoning the vehicle.
Dana released his photograph statewide.
Rachel agreed to provide a full statement in exchange for no promises.
She described her brother’s habits, safe locations, and contacts. Most led nowhere.
“He never trusts anyone long enough to stay with them,” she said.
“Did he trust you?” Dana asked.
“He trusted that I was afraid.”
Rachel explained that Mason began controlling her after Daniel vanished. He monitored her spending and threatened to show police the accounts in her name.
Whenever Lila asked about Daniel, Rachel repeated Mason’s story.
Your father stole money.
Your father ran.
Your father chose himself.
After enough repetition, Rachel began using the lie without Mason present.
“Did you believe it?” Dana asked.
“No.”
“Then why tell your daughter?”
“Because if she stopped waiting for Daniel, maybe I could stop too.”
Dana did not offer sympathy.
Rachel had used Lila’s grief to make her own cowardice easier.
The district attorney charged Rachel with kidnapping, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, child abandonment, and conspiracy. Murder-related charges depended on proof of her intent regarding Daniel’s death.
Mason faced attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, forgery, and additional charges involving the planned house sale.
Daniel remained too weak to attend the arraignment.
Lila stayed with a licensed foster family near the hospital because Claire had not yet located a safe relative placement.
Daniel hated the separation.
“I lost five months,” he told Dana. “Now I’m six miles away and still can’t take her home.”
“You’re recovering from surgery.”
“She thinks adults disappear whenever doors close.”
“Then show her where you are every day.”
Dana helped arrange video calls at the same time each morning and evening. Daniel never promised more than the next call.
Lila slowly began believing the screen would light again.
During one call, she asked:
“Did Uncle Mason take your blue book?”
Daniel froze.
“What blue book?”
“The one in the wall story.”
Daniel remembered.
Years earlier, while renovating the living room, he told Lila that old houses carried voices through beams and vents. He hid family papers behind a loose section of decorative trim above the couch, joking that the house could “speak” if they ever forgot where they belonged.
The ledger was not beneath the floor.
It was inside the wall above it.
Police returned immediately.
The trim had been disturbed.
The compartment was empty.
Someone had reached it after Daniel was rescued.
Security logs showed one person entered the house before the official seal was placed.
A uniformed utility worker who claimed to be checking for a gas leak.
